Friday Night Football: Raiders strike for win at Heritage

RINGGOLD — Southeast Whitfield spoiled Heritage-Catoosa’s homecoming Friday night and remained in the thick of the Sub-region 7B-4A playoff hunt with a convincing 30-13 victory.

“This was big for us because it puts us in the playoff picture,” Raiders coach Sean Gray said. “We need one more win. The worse that we can get now is fourth.”

Southeast lifted its sub-region record to 2-1 and improved to 2-5 overall. Heritage remains winless at 0-3 and 0-7.

Only the top three teams will play in region crossover games with state playoff implications in the final week of the regular season, and Gray knows his team will have to be better in back-to-back games against Northwest Whitfield and Dalton the next two weeks.

“It wasn’t a pretty game,” Gray said. “We had too many turnovers. We had too many penalties.”

Easton Ridley led a punishing Southeast running game that netted 308 yards by rushing for 178 yards on a mere nine carries.

“This is my first year as a running back,” the 5-foot-10-inch, 195-pound senior said. “I had been an outside linebacker the whole time. The offensive line played great tonight. I was getting my yardage mostly on traps.”

Quarterback  Blake Foster also enjoyed triple-digit running status with 103 yards on 13 attempts. He added 117 yards on 7-for-18 passing.

“This is probably the most complete game that we’ve  played,” Foster said. “We played well on both sides of the ball.”

On the night’s opening kickoff, the Generals failed to field a squib that gave the Raiders the ball at the 24. Ridley got the touchdown on an 11-yard sweep off the left end. Able Mendiola kicked his first of three extra points with 11:33 on the clock.

A Southeast fumble at its own 17 set up Heritage’s first score. Quarterback Jacob Carter got the touchdown on a 1-yard sneak, and Adam Alhyege kicked the tying point to make it 7-7 with 55 seconds to play in the quarter.

In the second period, the Raiders took the lead for good on Ridley’s 73-yard dash up the middle for a 14-7 lead with 10 minutes to halftime. On the next possession, Foster found a similar gap in the middle and raced 75 yards for a 20-7 halftime cushion.

Only 55 seconds remained in the third quarter when Mendiola booted a 28-yard field goal to make it 23-7.

Heritage answered moments later on Carter’s 62-yard pass to Seth Hickman which put the ball at the 17. Ketwun Burns ran the rest of the way for the touchdown, but a 2-point pass attempt fell short.

In the fourth, Ridley gave the Raiders some insurance with a 30-yard scoring gallop, and the Generals’ last-ditch effort was snuffed out by Abram Stanley’s interception at the Raiders’ 7 with 1:42 to play.
