Coahulla Creek head softball coach Rhett Parrott has stepped down to devote more time and effort to his duties as the school’s athletic director.
Parrott confirmed Monday night that assistant coach Josh Swiney has been named the new fast-pitch coach for the Lady Colts, the first head coaching job of his career. Both Parrott and Swiney will remain as assistant baseball coaches on the staff of head coach Michael Bolen.
“I hated to step down, but it was the best thing for the girls with the amount of time I have to devote to other things,” Parrott said. “They work too hard for me to not give them more than I was able to give this season. Coach Swiney will do a good job.”
Parrott was named the school’s athletic director last spring.
Swiney takes over a team that was 11-17 last season in its second year of existence. A 1998 graduate of Northwest Whitfield, Swiney has a long coaching résumé at the high school and college level. He was an assistant at Chattanooga State for the 2004 baseball season, coached at Murray County (2004-05), Christian Heritage (2006-08) and Lee University (2009). At Coahulla Creek, he was an assistant since the school started. He is a special education math-inclusion teacher.
“I am extremely excited,” Swiney said of his new duties. “It is an awesome group of girls coming up. We have a core group that will be juniors next year that have been with us for two years and are getting better and better each year.”
Swiney said because of his familiarity with the team, it should be an easy transition.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better situation to step into,” he said. “Rhett set a solid foundation and did a great job. He has his plate full doing what he is doing now, but we have a a fantastic feeder system. Mel Reed does a fantastic job at North Whitfield, and I am looking forward to getting in and working with those girls. The girls know me and know my personality and have been around me the last two years.”
