Prep softball: Lady Cats’ good run shut down

Dalton High’s softball season ended Wednesday in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs as the Lady Catamounts were swept by host Columbus High, 8-2 and 7-6.

Senior ace Allie Black-wood took the loss in both games. She threw seven innings in the first game, allowing 12 hits, and recorded just two outs in the second game as Columbus scored seven runs in the first inning.

In the first game, Dalton (15-19) scored twice in the top of the first and led 2-1 entering the third before Columbus scored four times.

“The big inning was the third,” Dalton coach Jeff McKinney said. “(Columbus is) 29-4 and they have some girls who can hit well. They had that one inning where they got hot.”

Sarah Stinnett scored the first run on a Columbus error, and Blakely Thomason drove in Destinee Woods.

In the second game, Dalton battled back from a seven-run deficit with four runs in the second and one each in the fifth and seventh.

“We had runners on first and second with a chance there in the last inning,” McKinney said.

Hannah Jones drove in two runs, while Woods had two RBIs and Thomason had one.

For Dalton, it marked the end of a late surge that included earning Region 7’s No. 3 seed for state despite being seeded last for the region tournament. Dalton won six of its final eight games, and the final innings of the second game were a symbol of the team’s fight, McKinney said.

“These girls battled and battled and battled,” he said. “The last game is evident of where we came from ... It’s easy to get down 7-0 and fold tent, but these girls stuck it out — just like our season. We could’ve folded tent with a 1-9 record (in sub-region play), but they battled. We’re one hit away from playing in the (state tournament). These girls have no reason to hold their heads down. Even the other coach was complimentary of our team.

“I’m extremely proud of how we ended our season. You never want to lose a game, but I’m extremely proud of how we never quit.”
