Roadrunners go long for signees

Dalton State College volleyball coach Bruna Langner has been a true Roadrunner recently, driving from Ooltewah, Tenn., to Kennesaw to sign players for the program’s first team.

Langner said Ooltewah High School’s Karly Newman, a 5-foot-9-inch outside hitter, is “going to help us a lot.”

“I wanted to stay pretty close to home but far enough that I could get the college experience,” Newman said. “I’ve known Bruna for a while, starting with when she was at Lee University and I attended camp up there.”

Newman said she expects great things for the Roadrunners, who will begin competition during the 2013-14 school year.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity I have, and I believe we’re going to have an amazing program,” she said.

Newman is a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society at Ooltewah and plans to major in secondary education.

Langner also signed Kennesaw’s Ashleigh Taylor Hathaway, who will transfer from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus.

Hathaway was captain of the North Cobb Christian volleyball team her junior and senior seasons. She sees Dalton as a “good fit.”

“I want to live out my dream of playing college volleyball,” she said. “I also love the small school environment and the North Georgia area.”

Said Langner, “Taylor will be an important part of our team. I look forward to seeing her contributions to the team and her accomplishments in the classroom.”

• NET GAIN, TOO: Dalton State tennis coaches Michel Bates and Zach Rogers are continuing to build their program as well, and now they have reached “down under” for another piece of the puzzle.

The Roadrunners have signed Adam Hornby, 17, of Christchurch, New Zealand. Hornby has competed in a number of International Tennis Federation tournaments, and Rogers said he is one of New Zea-land’s top-ranked junior players.

“Adam has an explosive game that is going to turn a lot of heads and make an impact from day one,” Rogers said. “He also excels academically and will be one of Dalton State’s brightest stars both on the court and in the classroom.”

Hornby was born in England. He has dual citizenship in New Zealand and Barbados. His brother currently plays at West Florida University in Pensacola. The brothers have a long-term goal of becoming members of the Davis Cup team for Barbados.

The new Roadrunner will be in Dalton this summer to train and help with lessons and summer camps at the Dalton Parks and Recreation Department’s tennis center at Lakeshore Park.

“We are extremely excited about having Adam come to Dalton State,” Bates said. “He is going to bring a lot of excitement to the program and it’s going to be great having him in Dalton for the summer.”

Hornby recently won the Otago Open in New Zealand, his first open level tournament title.

“I’m really looking forward to being a member of the tennis team at Dalton State this year,” he said. “I’m proud to be a part of the new intercollegiate varsity athletic program.”
