Kailey Vaughn likes the idea of staying at Dalton State College and being part of the very first Roadrunners women’s volleyball team.
The freshman, a 2012 graduate of Gordon County’s Sonoraville High School, became the first signee for Dalton State volleyball when she put her name on a letter of intent Tuesday at the college.
“It’s just a good school,” Vaughn said, “and I am really excited that they have a volleyball program starting this year and I am proud to be one of the inaugural signees.”
She said the addition of athletics to campus — the school anticipates beginning competition in several sports during the 2013-14 school year after not having an intercollegiate varsity athletics program for decades — played a role in her decision to attend Dalton State.
“I knew there was going to be a volleyball program started, and I had hoped it would begin in time for me to play, Vaughn said. “It turned out for the best.”
Vaughn was a three-sport athlete at Sonoraville, participating in volleyball, basketball and track and field. Dalton State volleyball will begin in the fall and provide the first on-campus athletics for the school’s new sports program.
Roadrunners volleyball coach Bruna Langner, who excelled at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. — she is the program’s all-time leader in blocks, helped the Flames make the NAIA national tournament each of her four seasons and was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame this past fall — said she hopes to recruit a lot more local players, including current Dalton State students.
The Roadrunners anticipate becoming a member of the NAIA, and representatives of the organization were on campus Monday to tour future venues for the school’s athletic teams.

A state championship is a nice accomplishment on its own, but an undefeated mark makes a team’s status elite even among the title winners.
