New manager named for Okefenokee wildlife refuge

FOLKSTON — Curtis McCasland, manager of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Arizona for the past three years, has been named manager of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

The 42-year-old McCasland has worked at Cabeza Prieta for 10 years, and says the swampy Okefenokee will give him a chance to use the wetlands education he got in college.

The Okefenokee is the largest wildlife refuge east of the Mississippi River. At 402,000 acres it’s half the size of Cabeza Prieta but gets 10 times as many visitors.

McCasland starts his new job on Oct. 12. He replaces George Constantino, who retired in July.
