Expect delays on SR 1/U.S. 27 in Walker County on Dec. 29
The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising motorists in Walker County of lane closures on U.S. 27/State Route (SR) 1 at mile marker 20, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009. The two northbound lanes of SR 1 by Shaw Industries will be closed, and traffic will be channeled into the southbound lanes, one lane in each direction, to allow work by the company on replacing its tall tower next to the highway. This work by Shaw Industries and the lane closures it necessitates are weather permitting and subject to change.
The Georgia DOT urges motorists in Walker County to watch out for these lane closures and pay attention to this work zone. “We certainly hope that all motorists watch out for these lane closures and be extra cautious, while approaching this work zone,” said Kent Sager, district engineer at the DOT office in Cartersville. “The closure of the northbound lanes of the Highway may be causing the public some inconvenience, but it is a necessary measure for the safety of the traveling public,” Sager explained.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia’s economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment. Additional transportation revenues are imperative to grow and sustain Georgia's economic vitality and quality of life through the 21st Century. Georgia is the 3rd fastest-growing state in the nation, yet 49th in per capita spending on transportation. For general information on the Georgia DOT, please visit our Web site (www.dot.ga.gov).
