ATLANTA (AP) — Police dispatchers in Atlanta say a bomb squad was sent Friday morning to The Temple, an historic synagogue on Peachtree Street, to check out a suspicious package.
The package was reported at about 6:30 a.m. at the synagogue, which was founded in 1867.
Fire Capt. Rick Perdue said a caretaker discovered the package, described as a box wrapped in plastic.
Perdue said the package is about a foot and a half long and six inches wide and was found in a driveway.
Two lanes of the busy street in Atlanta’s midtown area were blocked by firetrucks and police cars.
A dynamite blast blew a hole in the side of The Temple in 1958. No one was injured in the blast, and no one was ever convicted in the case.
