BLAIRSVILLE — On December 2, at 11:00 a.m. a long awaited event will take place at the home site of Byron Herbert Reece, Georgia’s Appalachian Poet/Novelist as designated by the Georgia General Assembly. Union County Commissioner. Lamar Paris and the Byron Herbert Reece Society announce Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center. The public is invited. Major construction will take place on the 9.3 acre site located on US Hwy 19/129 one mile North of Vogel State Park in the Choestoe Valley, Union County. The construction will consist of an entrance road, parking, base for the Poetry Plaza, renovation of the Reece home into a Visitors Center, construction of a large Pavilion and walking paths throughout the venue.
When the venue is completed it will also contain an Amphitheatre seating 300 and extensive Educational Exhibits of antique farm and home implements displayed in the five farm buildings which already exist on the property.
The mission of the Reece Farm and Heritage Center is to provide, promote and perpetuate the legacy of Byron Herbert Reece and the Appalachian lifestyle he lived which greatly influenced his writings.
