County to study jail conditions

WOODBINE, Ga. (AP) — Camden County commissioners say an independent study is needed before deciding how to deal with overcrowding at the coastal county’s jail, but Sheriff Tommy Gregory says something must be done soon.

The commission voted at its Tuesday meeting to have the National Institute of Corrections determine the best way to resolve the overcrowding.

Gregory says the 120-bed jail in Woodbine is over capacity by about 110 inmates. He says three studies have already been conducted.

Commissioner Steve Berry says he blames Superior Court judges for not considering all options before they jail someone.

Chief Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams says judges are doing everything they can to reduce the inmate population.
