ATLANTA —
Gov. Nathan Deal has backed state Rep. Doug Collins in a close Republican runoff election for a Congressional seat in north Georgia.
Deal recorded an automated telephone message supporting Collins that will be targeted at voters ahead of Tuesday’s GOP runoff in the 9th Congressional district. Collins faces conservative talk show host Martha Zoller in the race. The winner of the GOP runoff is heavily favored to win the general election given the Republican Party’s strength in the region.
“Doug has served as my floor leader in the State House, and he’s helped me enact laws that protect life, crack down on illegal immigration and cut taxes to promote jobs,” Deal said in the call, according to a transcript provided by Collins’ campaign.
The upcoming election Tuesday has become a closely contested race. Collins beat Zoller by just over 700 votes, or less than 1 percent of ballots, in last month’s primary election. Because Collins failed to win a majority, the race went into a runoff between the first- and second-place finishers, Collins and Zoller. In a surprise, retired principal Roger Fitzpatrick won 17 percent of the primary election vote, leaving a large pool of voters who could decide the runoff election on Tuesday.
The winner of the GOP runoff will face Democrat Jody Cooley in the November general election.
Both Collins and Zoller have courted endorsements. Besides support from Deal, Collins has been endorsed by former Georgia Gov. Zell Miller and House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge. Zoller has been endorsed by Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain.
