Six killed in 19 months at northeast Georgia intersection
DEMOREST — Authorities say six people, as young as 7, have died in traffic accidents at the same northeast Georgia intersection over the past 19 months.
Habersham County Coroner Don Pitts said the latest victim was 89-year-old Frank Trotter of Clarkesville, who died Tuesday at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta after a collision at the intersection of Ga. 365 and Mount Airy-Demorest Road.
Trotter was attempting a turn from the northbound lanes of 365 when his car collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Thomas Wilfred, 48, of Toccoa, the Georgia State Patrol said. Wilfred was treated and released from Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Teri Pope, spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Transportation, said a controlled interchange is planned at the intersection on the divided, four-lane highway. But she said the project is not yet funded and preliminary engineering is not on DOT’s three-year project list.
The evening of Aug. 29, the DOT is holding a hearing in Lula for input on improvements to Ga. 365 between Gainesville and the site of Trotter’s death.
Pope says that in 1993, 1996 and 2003, the intersection was upgraded with traffic signals as well as turn and acceleration lanes. But nationally, Pope said, “55 percent of all crashes are at signalized intersections.”
