ATLANTA —
The Georgia General Assembly has approved a $19.3 billion midyear budget, which now awaits a signature from Gov. Nathan Deal.
The budget — which runs through June 30 — includes an extra $167 million for local school districts and fills a $200 million shortfall in Georgia’s health care program for the poor, elderly and disabled.
House Appropriations Chairman Terry England, an Auburn Republican, says lagging tax collections required spending cuts in certain areas of the budget. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/Wtztws) reports the midyear budget cuts $73 million from the University System of Georgia and nearly $40 million from economic development programs.
The midyear budget does not include any cuts associated with automatic federal funding cuts that went into effect March 1.
