Divers find body of 13-year-old in lake

BUFORD — Search crews on Wednesday found the body of a 13-year-old Georgia boy who had been missing since a boating accident that killed his 9-year-old brother nine days ago on Lake Lanier, according to authorities.

Hall County Sheriff’s Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said the body of Griffin Prince was found just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, submerged 113 feet in the waters of the lake north of Atlanta.

Wilbanks said Prince’s body was located by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s sonar technology and recovered by the Hall County Sheriff’s office. The teen’s body was taken to the DeKalb County medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, according to Wilbanks.

Prince has been missing since the night of June 18 when the pontoon boat he and family members were aboard was rammed by a fishing boat. His brother, Jake Prince, died at the scene.

Authorities have charged 44-year-old Paul J. Bennett of Cumming in the deadly wreck. He faces a charge of boating under the influence.

Mike Prince Sr., the boys’ grandfather, said the boater who struck the pontoon boat stopped and watched for about 10 minutes after hitting the pontoon boat.

The boats collided between Lake Lanier Islands and Buford Dam, about 40 miles from Atlanta.
