ATLANTA —
Dozens of legislative candidates in the July 31 primary have embraced the $100 cap on lobbyist gifts being pushed at the Gold Dome, but the measure does not yet have enough steam to pass a House chamber reluctant to rein in limits on lobbyists.
The discussion around lobbyist gift caps is significant because it would impose a limit for the first time. As proposed, the cap bans registered lobbyists from giving any gift valued at more than $100 to a public official. Currently, public officials can take anything from lobbyists without limit or consequence and lobbyists can give anything as long as they file a public disclosure with the state ethics commission.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports lobbyists have reported nearly $1 million in gifts so far this year.
