ATLANTA (AP) — Winter made a comeback in Georgia on Saturday as icy winds chilled residents accustomed to unseasonably warm temperatures and snow flurries fell in some northern counties.
The state Department of Transportation sent crews to extreme northeast Georgia where they were needed to clear snow from state routes in Towns and Union counties, where less than half an inch had accumulated.
Flurries were reported as far south as the northern areas of metro Atlanta as a cold front crossed the Southeast. Wind chills were forecast in single-digits for northern parts of the state Sunday morning.
Wind advisories Saturday warned of possible gusts of up to 40 mph in Macon and other middle Georgia communities, with sustained winds of up to 25 mph.
The National Weather Service issued a hard freeze warning extending into south Georgia overnight and into early Sunday. Low temperatures from the mid-teens to the mid-20s were forecast Saturday night.
Forecasters warned Georgians to brace for a few days of wet, chilly weather with a possibility of sleet mixed with snow in northern counties Monday and Tuesday. Southern Georgian on those days could see sleet and rain.
The cold snap breaks an otherwise cozy streak of warm temperatures across Georgia this winter. Weather Service data shows that before thermometers plunged Saturday, Atlanta’s average temperature this February had been 53 degrees. That’s 7.6 degrees above normal for this time of year.
