DAHLONEGA —
A 180-year-old cabin from north Georgia’s gold rush era will be used by college students to learn about the lives of its former residents.
The small cabin was moved six miles Tuesday morning to its new location at North Georgia College & State University, The Times of Gainesville reported (http://bit.ly/zt8SnK ).
Students will have the opportunity to uncover the history of the cabin, which will also be used as a performance stage, school officials said.
Students might be able to gather oral histories from descendants of the people who lived in the cabin, said Rosann Kent, program director of the Georgia Appalachian Studies Center. It was donated to the school by Jim and Betty Smulian.
Historians say the first major U.S. gold rush took place in the Dahlonega area around 1828.
Kent said it wasn’t known whether any gold miners lived in the cabin, but the structure was certainly from the same time period.
“As far as the specifics of who lived in it and when to when, we don’t know,” Kent said. “That’s where the students will be researching and scholars will study and figure out. So we have a lot of story gathering to do to put all of the pieces together.”
