Storm could drop 10 inches of rain on parts of Ga.

BRUNSWICK — Slow-moving Tropical Storm Debby could bring up to 10 inches of rain to parts of Georgia through Wednesday, forecasters said.

The storm had already downed trees in St. Marys on Monday, damaging a car and a gift shop in the city’s downtown area, The Brunswick News reported. There have been some sporadic power outages in the Brunswick area, said Jay Wiggins, director of the Glynn County Emergency Management Agency.

“This should be mainly a rain event for us,” Wiggins said. Emergency managers will continue to monitor areas that are prone to flooding, he added.

Further south, the St. Marys River was rising near the Georgia-Florida line and could threaten homes if the rain continues, The Florida Times-Union reported.

“The river is running. It’s running hard,” said Bruce Young, the emergency management director in the south Georgia county of Charlton.

The rain was also turning dirt roads to mud in parts of south Georgia, which could make some impassable, authorities said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has placed signs warning of standing water on Georgia 94 west of St. George in Charlton County and on U.S. 441 near Fargo in southern Clinch County, the Georgia State Patrol said.

On Cumberland Island off the Georgia coast, all campers have been taken off the island until further notice because of the continued threat Debby poses to the region.

By late Tuesday morning, the storm was about 70 miles west of northwest Florida and moving east at 3 mph. Debby was weakening and had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph.
