ATLANTA —
The Fulton County school board has voted to eliminate nearly 1,000 jobs, more than half of them teaching positions.
County schools Superintendent Cindy Loe says the cuts approved Thursday night include 100 custodial jobs and 59 positions in the district’s elementary band and orchestra program.
She says the cuts were needed to offset a $120 million deficit.
The cuts were in addition to more than $34 million in reductions approved in February.
The system is proposing a 2011 budget that is about $137 million less than the 2010 budget, from $857 million to $720 million.
Employees who lose their jobs will remain on the payroll through June 30.
