North Murray starter Hannah Hensley gave up just four hits and a walk, but the Lady Mountaineers gave away seven errors in a 9-2 loss to Sonoraville in Sub-region 7B-2A softball action on Thursday in Chatsworth.
“What hits they got were bloop hits,” North Murray coach Lestine Hensley said. “She pitched very well. But with seven errors, it’s hard.”
Hensley struck out two.
The offense also stalled for North Murray (4-6, 0-3 Sub-region 7B-2A), which stranded 11 baserunners, but Samantha Stafford had three hits and Jocelyn Blair added a double.
• Murray County 9, Gilmer 4: Freshman shortstop Kara Deal went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run to lead the Lady Indians to a region victory in Chatsworth.
Courtney Goforth added a hit, two RBIs and a run, and Kolby Keener drove in two runs as Murray County (6-9, 2-3 Region 7-3A) collected seven hits.
Lady Indians starter Karli Timms held Gilmer to just four hits while striking out five and walking two. Two of the four runs she surrendered in seven innings of work were unearned.
• Dalton 15, Cartersville 0: Allie Blackwood threw a no-hitter in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule, finishing with four strikeouts and allowing two walks.
Errors and walks plagued the Lady Purple Hurricanes against the Lady Catamounts (2-5, 2-2 Region 7-3A), who had three hits.
• Ridgeland 4, Southeast Whitfield 3: The Lady Panthers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to win.
Danielle Pearson had three hits for Southeast Whitfield (4-4, 1-3 Region 7-3A), while Ashley Strong and Tavi Parris each added two hits and an RBI.
• Northwest Whitfield 11, Cass 5: Emily Boyd went the distance in the win for the Lady Bruins in Cartersville, allowing just five hits and striking out seven.
Bayli Cruse (two RBIs) and Macy Weeks (one RBI) each went 2-for-4, while Amy Shampo and McKinley Poteet also provided two hits for the Lady Bruins (6-5, 3-2 in Region 7-4A).
Cross country
• North Murray finished third in both boys and girls competition in a tri-meet with Calhoun and Pepperell.
Isaac Pacheco won the boys race with a time of 19:17, and other top finishers for the Mountaineers were Jesus Cruz (23:06) and Ismael Cruz (26:11).
The Lady Mountaineers’ top finishers were Kerstin Amos (35:04), Vanessa Carlos (29:56) and Veronica Miguel (35:06).
Volleyball
• In non-area action at Gordon Lee, Southeast handed the previously undefeated Lady Trojans their first loss in 13 matches this season, winning 25-20, 24-26, 25-13.
The Lady Raiders (11-8) also beat Sonoraville, 25-22, 25-13.
For the tri-match, Shelby MacFarland led Southeast with 19 kills and 14 digs, and Carli Ledford had a team-high 26 digs. Hannah Graham had 36 assists and six aces, with Emellee Oliver and Megan Collins contributing 11 kills each. Emily Edgeman had four aces and Anna Smith added 12 digs.
• North Murray split a tri-match at the Murray County Recreation Center with a win over Adairsville, 25-11, 25-7, and a loss to Ridgeland, 18-25, 25-16, 21-25.
It was the third time the Lady Mountaineers and Ridgeland have met this season, with the Lady Panthers taking two of the matches.
“It was a game of momentum swings,” North Murray coach Mike Pritchett said. “In the first game, Ridgeland had it. North Murray picked it up in the second game. In the third game it really went back and forth. We had a seven-point lead before they came back and won it.”
Hanna Abdelerazzaq had 13 digs against Ridgeland, while Grace Phillips added 12 attacks, 12 digs and eight kills.
In the win against Adairsville, Iliana Munguia had six digs and Alex Westmoreland added nine aces.
• Northwest dropped to 1-11 overall with a 25-12, 25-5 loss outside of area play at Ringgold.
In a junior varsity match, Shelby Bielling and Sarah Thomas led the Lady Bruins with six kills each in a 20-25, 25-18, 15-10 win. Dariann Haney added six aces.
• Dalton picked up a 25-22, 25-13 win in non-area action at LaFayette despite missing several starters due to illness.
Susan Meinders had eight kills, Mary Faith Erwin added five and Joana Rosales finished with 21 assists for the Lady Cats (6-7).
“They really all pulled together and played well,” Lady Cats coach Joey Wills said. “We had excellent bench play.”
Dalton’s junior varsity lost 25-20, 25-18 to LaFayette, but got strong play from Alison Parker, Carson Sharp and Katie Wilson.
In freshman matches in Chatsworth, Dalton lost to JV squads from Ridgeland, 25-21, 31-29, and North Murray, 25-23, 25-11.
JV football
• Murray County 14, North Murray 6: Murray County controlled the ball for most of the first half in a season-opening defensive battle, Brady Todd had two touchdown passes and Courtland Morales added a two-point conversion.
“The offensive line did an incredible job tonight,” Indians coach Chris Thornbury said.
• Northwest 37, Woodland-Bartow 6: The Bruins dominated the ground game in a season-opening road victory as Oshea Hill and Luke Hensley provided rushing touchdowns.
Matt Allen also grabbed a touchdown reception, and Bruins coaches said Jed Farmer played well on defense.
MS football
• Christian Heritage 14, Dominion Christian 14: Matt Cook ran for one touchdown and caught a two-point pass from Brady Souther in the Lions’ season opener, while Ian Robbins added the other Christian Heritage touchdown.
MS softball
• New Hope 15, Eastbrook 0: Brileigh Baggett struck out eight and threw three perfect innings in a run-rule shortened win for the Lady Kodiaks (2-0).
Sydney Storey was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs, and Kylee Ward added a double for the Lady Kodiaks.
• Westside 6, North Whitfield 2: Shelbe Dilbeck picked up the win with a six-strikeout performance, and McCall Carlock had two hits for Westside in a season-opening win.
