ROME — It’s been a while since Armuchee High’s football team has been able ring its victory bell — not since last season.
But on Friday night, the victory bell rang loudly as Jordan Collins led the team to a 45-7 homecoming victory over Murray County.
“Well, we came out and did what we needed to do and set the tempo,” Armuchee coach Preston Cash said. “We had better production from our offense and hopefully we can build on this.”
It wasn’t just the first victory of the season for Armuchee (1-3, 1-0 .
Armuchee improved to 1-3 and started Region 7-2A play with a win, while Murray County fell to 0-4 and 0-1 in region play.
One highlight for Murray County was a 126-yard rushing effort on 17 carries by senior Brady Todd — the quarterback played some as a slot back — who had the team’s only score on an 80-yard run in the third quarter. Also, Miguel Barajas had an interception in the same period.
“Brady had a good game,” Murray County coach John Hammond said. “He played his heart out in fact.”
But Hammond knows it’s going to take more from his team to break through.
“We’ve just got to understand that you’ve got to play four quarters,” he said. “... They’ve got a couple kids they utilzed pretty good, putting them in space.”
Collins had the biggest night for Armuchee and it wasn’t just from running the ball. The senior running back racked up 152 rushing yards on 14 carries with three rushing touchdowns, he had a 54-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jacob Farmer and he also had an interception on defense.
“We’ve been working hard and we knew we needed a big a win — and we got it,” Collins said. “This is a good start to (region play), and this feels great.”
Collins and Cash know it was a complete team effort that led the Indians to their first victory, but that it was Collins that led the way.
“Well, I told him at the beginning of the week it was time for him to have a big game, and he did,” Cash said. “The boys up front did a good job for him, and he has worked hard to get where he’s at, and I’m proud of him and the whole team.”
Armuchee’s total rushing attack finished the night with 250 yards on 37 carries.
Armuchee forced four turnovers, with interceptions by Collins and Will Phillips.
