Prep roundup: Dalton, Southeast volleyball finish strong

Southeast Whitfield volleyball lost its first five but ended with two straight wins in the Tennessee Tandem Tournament at Chattanooga’s Girls Preparatory School.

On Friday, the Lady Raiders lost to East Hamilton 25-11, 25-19 to open the tournament and Hixson 25-16, 22-25, 15-10. The final Friday contest was against South Carolina’s Hillcrest, and Souheast lost 25-11, 25-11.

The Lady Raiders dropped both of Saturday’s pool play matches despite going to three sets. They fell to Sonoraville 25-21, 24-26, 15-10 and then to Nashville’s Brentwood Academy 25-13, 16-25, 15-4.

In bracket play, Southeast beat Northwest 25-20, 25-18 and Pope John Paul II 28-26, 26-24.

Megan Collins had 64 kills in the tournament, and Hannah had 105 assists. The Lady Raiders now are 17-8 on the season.

“That’s why we go to these tournaments,” Southeast coach Jake Dickey said. “We scheduled two really hard tournaments because we don’t want to scheudle a bunch of easy games and not get anything out of it and then play a really hard team the first time in the playoffs. It’s kept the girls in a reality check and reminded us there are some teams out there that could be better.”

Northwest went 0-5 over the two days of the tournament, losing to GPS (25-10, 25-15) and Oakland (25-12, 25-19) on Friday. On Saturday, the Lady Bruins fell to Cleveland (25-18, 25-12), Signal Mountain (25-17, 25-13) and Southeast.

Sarah Thomas led the team with 15 kills for the tournament and three blocks. Mary Kate Allen had 13 kills and six blocks, while Peyton Maret finished with 10 kills for Northwest (6-16).

• Dalton stormed back through its bracket after losing three matches in pool play to win the Silver Championship at the Darlington Invitational in Rome.

The Lady Catamounts (11-8) beat East Hall 25-22, 25-23 in bracket play and then topped Houston County 25-15, 25-18 in the championship match. Dalton lost in three sets to East Hall (26-24, 17-25, 15-10) and in straight sets to Mill Creek (25-17, 25-15) and Allatoona (25-17, 25-15) in bracket play to start the day.

Mill Creek was the overall tournament champions.

Dalton’s Kara Pendley led the way with 52 assists, while Susan Meinders had 48 kills and Macie Noles finished with 40 digs.
