Jamie Jones: Sgt. Slaughter salutes troops

Here are the notes and news items from the week in pro wrestling: And that’s an order, J.R.!

Former WWE wrestler Sgt. Slaughter made an appearance with recent “Dancing With the Stars” winner J.R. Martinez at the annual Washington Auto Show for “a special tribute for the troops,” according to The Washington Examiner.

Martinez is a Dalton High School graduate who played football for the Catamounts and became nationally known as a result of his role on “All My Children” and his win on “DWTS.”

• A high-ranking official at a local law enforcement agenciy asked that I update him on some names of wrestling’s past. Since he has arresting powers, it’s in my best interest to oblige.

Here’s the first installment of “Whatever happened to ...?”

Gordon Solie: Known as “the dean of wrestling announcers,” Solie was the indisputable voice for a generation of fans. His phrases — “pier six brawl” and “crimson mask” — became a part of the wrestling lexicon.

Best known for his work on Georgia Championship Wrestling, Solie worked for several other promotions before his death in July 2000. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Local Corner: TWA will hold its 21-year anniversary on Feb. 21 at the TWA Arena. Anyone involved with TWA past or present can contact Big Will at (706) 979-0800 or find him on Facebook by searching for Will Ayers.

In matches last Saturday night: Ray Fury defeated Da Bill in an Action Zone title rematch; Josh Vaughn downed Mikey Watkins in a Southern title match; Will Force topped Wandy da Wrestler. After the match the rest of HCP 2.0 jumped Wandy until Honor & Respect made the save and set up the six-man tag main event; Ricochet defeated Andrew West; The Greenhouse outlasted Tiffany and an injured Josh Vaughn; HCP 2.0 and Honor & Respect and Wandy da Wrestler fought to a no contest.

TWA Friday Night Brawl runs at 8 p.m. at the TWA Arena off Reed Road in north Whitfield County, about three miles north of the bypass. The TWA Action Zone runs at 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets for all shows are $5 for adults and $3 for ages 6 to 12; senior citizens 60 years and older with proof of age will be admitted for $3. Kids younger than 6 are admitted free. Any military member with proper identification will be admitted free. If it’s your birthday, you will be admitted free.

Trivia Teaser: What did Slick win a WWF “Slammy” award for in 1987?

Last week’s question: What is the only former WCW “Monster Jam” truck still competing under its original name?

Madusa.

Jamie Jones enjoys a good monster truck pull. He can be reached at jamiejones@daltoncitizen.com or (706) 272-7723.
