Adam Krohn: Brown’s work in class pays

Stryker Brown signed a partial athletic scholarship to play baseball for the Eagles of Georgia Southern last week and next week he’ll receive more scholarship money to help him with his college costs.

Brown, a senior at Dalton High, was one of 29 athletes in Georgia selected for the 2009 George Morris Scholar Athlete Award, which is sponsored by the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Brown — who plays football and baseball for the Catamounts — was selected the honor for his outstanding work in the classroom, where he said he has a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 heading into his final semester in high school.

“It’s a good honor to be selected,” Brown said. “I’ve just tried to go into class, learn everyday and make good grades and it paid off.”

Brown will accept the scholarship money — $1,000 that can be used anytime over the next three years — on Dec. 30 at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl’s Big Egg Scholarship Luncheon, which will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta.

While at the luncheon, Brown will have the opportunity to meet with players and coaches from the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech — the two participants in this year’s Chick-Fil-A bowl.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet some of those college players I see on TV on Saturdays,” Brown said.

Brown said, as a reward for being selected for the scholarship, he’ll also receive tickets to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, which will be played on Dec. 31 at the Georgia Dome.

• WDNN sports producer Jeremy Babin is moving on to Columbus, where he’ll be the new sports anchor for WLTZ-NBC, channel 38. This week will be his last on NewsWatch 10 but his last appearance on Dalton television will be in an end-of-the-year broadcast of “The Sports Zone,” a special 30-minute edition recapping the highlights of the 2009 prep sports seasons.

Babin, originally from Beachwood, Ohio, told me what he’ll miss most about covering sports in Northwest Georgia is the Dalton-Northwest Whitfield rivalry — regardless of which sport the two schools were competing against each other in.

• The Daily Citizen will release two All-Area Teams — Player of the Year included — this week. The softball team will run in Thursday’s edition on Christmas Eve and the football team will run Friday’s edition on Christmas day.
