Lady Bruins fall to host Parkview

Lauren Coleman scored a game-high 25 points to lead host Parkview past Northwest Whitfield, 45-41, on Tuesday in the Park-view Thanksgiving tournament.

The Lady Bruins (1-2) led throughout but Parkview, which is a Class 5A school, took advantage of a couple of turnovers and Coleman hit two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of play to overtake Northwest.

“She’s good,” Northwest coach Margaret Stockburger said of Coleman. “The turnovers hurt us and we didn’t block out some on the other end. Coleman’s 3s put them up and we couldn’t get the lead back.”

The Lady Bruins, who went 28-3 and reached the Class 4A state tournament quarterfinals last season, dropped the opening game of the tournament to Loganville (50-45 in overtime) and beat Alpharetta (57-43) on Monday.

“We’ve got some things we have to get better at,” Stockburger said. “That’s why we came down here, to find out what we need to get better at, and we’ll go back to practice and work on those things. We’ve got a few days before we play again.”

The Lady Bruins’ next game is on Dec. 5 against Southeast Whitfield.

• Dalton girls 53, Flowery Branch 33: Shelby Whitfield tossed in 16 points and the Lady Catamounts held high-scoring guard Jessica Harper to 10 points — just two in the first half — in the Adairsville tournament.

“We played really good defense and we threw several different defenses at Harper,” Dalton coach Jeff McKinney said. “Annalee Houston and April Besley did a good job on her. She averaged 19 or 20 points last season and we held her to two in the first half.”

Amanda Rector added 11 points for the Lady Cats (1-0).

“Any win is big, especially early in the season when you’re regrouping with your girls,” McKinney said. “That builds momentum and some confidence in girls who haven’t played that much before.”

The Lady Cats return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Adairsville when they will play the North Cobb Christian-Adairsville winner.

• Heritage-Catoosa boys 81, Murray County 75: The Indians (1-1) had three players in double figures, but Murray managed to hit just 2 of 27 3-point shots in the Ridgeland Thanksgiving tournament.

“That was the difference in the game,” Indians coach Greg Linder said. “We have to shoot better than that.”

Seth Davenport led the Indians with 20 points. Taylor Patterson had 16 points and Beau Booth 14. Trent Jackson led the Patriots with 17 points, Riley Sparks scored 16 and Cody Sherlin 12.

Heritage stretched its lead to 20 points in the third quarter, but the Indians managed to cut the deficit to four with about two minutes left in the game, Linder said.

“We just couldn’t finish it off,” he said. “We played the last two and a half quarters, but we have to do that from the start. We started very slowly again.”

• Heritage-Catoosa girls 56, Murray County 47: Brittany Harvey scored 23 points to lead the Lady Patriots in the Ridgeland Thanksgiving tournament.

Mariah Parker scored 12 points for the Lady Indians (0-2) and Tember Marchant added nine.

Murray County plays Ringgold today at 7 p.m.

• Rockmart boys 57, Model 54: Drew Patrick paced Rockmart with 19 points and Shaquille Calhoun scored 18 for Model in the Southeast Whitfield Thanksgiving tournament.

Model will play host Southeast Whitfield at 5:30 p.m. today.

• Model girls 64, Rockmart 17: Tinia Reynolds scored 13 points to lead Model to the easy victory in the Southeast Whitfield Thanksgiving tournament. Model will play the winner of today’s Mundy’s Mill-McEachern game on Friday at 4 p.m.
