Dalton begins season with dominating win

Dalton’s swim teams hosted — and dominated — a season-opening tri-match against Northwest Whitfield and Cartersville on Thursday. The Catamounts won with 164 points over the Bruins (93) and the Purple Hurricanes (47) while the Lady Catamounts (162) coasted past the Lady Purple Hurricanes (92) and Lady Bruins (38).

“It was a very good way to open the season,” said Dalton coach Charles Todd, who watched his squads produce 11 state qualifying times. “We looked strong in all events and we had some fun.”

Those with state qualifying efforts were the boys’ 200 meter medley relay team of Talyor Dale, Hunter Mulkey, Omar Farag and Harris News in 1 minute, 49.27 seconds; the boys’ 200 freestyle team (1:39.47) of Austin Mobley, News, Pierson Scarborough and Farag; Farag (100 butterfly, 55.54); Brad Tharpe (500 freestyle, 5:15.05) and Wil Cushman (500 freestyle, 5:18.98); Dale (100 backstroke, 58:37); Hunter Mulkey (100 breaststroke, 1:06.54) and Harris News (100 breastsroke,1:08.10); the girls’ 200 medley team (2:02.64) of Joana Rosales, Rebecca Davis, Maddie Scarborough and Maranda Storey; Rosales (200 freestyle, 2:09.36; 100 backstroke, 1:04.79) and Davis (100 breastroke, 1:15.92).

Other Dalton winners were Farag (200 freestyle, 1:56.26); News (200 individual medley, 2:12.95); Mobley (50 freestyle, 24.16), Chase Hair (1 meter dive, 216.20 points); Dale (100 free, 53.54); the boys’ 400 relay team (3:51.23) of Tharpe, Mulkey, Cushman and Dale; the girls’ 200 freestyle relay team (1:53.14) of Maddie Scarborough, Elizabeth News, Anna Clark and Rosales); the girls’ 400 relay team (4:38.23) of Perla Trejo, Storey, Tyler Todd and Davis; Davis (200 IM, 2:24.88); Storey (50 free, 26.99); Kathryn Lutrick (1 drive, 180.55 points); Maddie Scarborough (100 butterfly, 1:06.16) and Elizabeth News (100 freestyle, 1:04.36).

Varsity basketball

• Signal Mountain boys 52, Christian Heritage 48: The Lions (1-1) were led by Will Clark’s 18 points, Terrell Wilson’s 13 points and nine rebounds and Landon McClure’s nine points and seven rebounds. Signal Mountain’s Luke Locke had 16 points.

• Christian Heritage girls 51, Signal Mountain 39: The Lady Lions (2-0) were led by Maggie Peeples’ 18 points and 11 rebounds. Caty Nagel added 14 points and eight rebounds and Bradley Townsend had nine points and three steals.

Sidney Abdajay led Signal Mountain with 14 points.

• Northwest Whitfield girls 56, Polk County (Tenn.) 54: In a preseason scrimmage, the Lady Bruins were led by Quaneisha McCurty’s 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks, followed by Christy Robinson’s 11 points and two blocks, Kelsey Kirk’s six rebounds, Emily Trew’s seven assists and Baleigh Coley’s four assists.

JV basketball

• Signal Mountain boys 45, Christian Heritage 37: The Lions (0-2) were led by Michael McKinney’s 15 points and Cole Townsend’s 14 points. Signal Mountain’s Cody Challenger led all scorers with 17 points.

• Christian Heritage girls 44, Signal Mountain 22: The Lady Lions (2-0) were led by Rebecca Leonard’s 10 points, Marah McEntyre’s nine points and Cierra Chaney’s eight points. Ann Schmidt led Signal Mountain with eight points.

MS basketball

• Bagley eighth boys 36, Dalton 31: The Braves were led by Markell Harkless’ nine points. The Cougars (1-3) were led by Josh Satterfield’s eight points.

• Dalton seventh boys 45, Bagley 27: The Lady Cougars (1-3) got 14 points from Ty Pendley and Chase Westfall and Jordan McKinney each scored six. Nathan Spivey led the Braves with seven points.

• Bagley eighth girls 38, Dalton 32: The Lady Braves (3-2) were led by Wendy Crider’s 12 points and Destinee Woods led the Lady Cougars (0-4) with nine points.
