Christian Heritage’s Lions and Lady Lions successfully opened their basketball seasons Tuesday night with victories over visiting Georgia Cumberland.
The Lions had a much tougher time winning than the Lady Lions did.
Christian Heritage got 27 points from Will Clark, Landon McClure added 26 and the Lions held off Georgia Cumberland, 69-67, despite missing 10 of 26 free throws, eight in the fourth quarter.
Georgia Cumberland stayed close by making 9 of 11 in the final eight minutes.
“Still, it was a good win after we only had one practice with our football guys,” Lions coach Chad Woodson said.
Terrell Wilson added 12 points for Christian Heritage. Isaac Nwadike and Kayne Leeper each scored 18 points for Georgia Cumberland.
• Christian Heritage girls 70, Georgia Cumberland 20: Maggie Peeples scored 17 points and added six rebounds and six assists for the Lady Lions. Caty Nagel finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Meg Crawford was also in double figures with 10 points.
Bradley Townsend and Kathryn Green each had eight points.
“I think it was a good game for us to see how we would play against somebody else,” Christian Heritage coach Heather Lowery said.
The Lady Lions led 23-4 after one quarter and cruised to the easy win.
Brandi Taylor led Georgia Cumberland with six points.
• Murray County’s Indians got in their preseason scrimmage at Polk County, beating the Wildcats, 78-39, behind Taylor Patterson’s 16 points.
Zach England added 10 points for coach Greg Linder’s Indians, who open their season on Friday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
Linder said his squad came up with 21 steals against the Wildcats in the game played at Benton, Tenn.

A shared success
(Misty Watson/The Daily Citizen) Dalton High’s Dante Thomas, left, and Caylor Summers, second from right, are congratulated by fellow senior Catamounts Scott Abernathy, second from left, and Tre Bonds. Thomas and Summers both had signing ceremonies in the Dalton High commons on Wednesday. Thomas, a defensive back, will play at Carson-Newman. Summers, who served as a manager the past three seasons, received a scholarship to fill the same role at Jacksonville State.
Dalton High’s Caylor Summers hasn’t been on the football field as a player since he was a freshman, becoming a team manager when injuries forced him to give up the game. The Catamounts’ Danté Thomas was such a shutdown defensive back in his final two seasons, most opposing coaches didn’t want their players on his part of the field.
