Knock off the rust and play

NW volleyball team wins twice

Recent flooding across North Georgia has made even the simplest everyday tasks tough to accomplish for those who live in the area. Roads are closed, homes are ruined and some schools have been shut down in recent days.

In Tunnel Hill, it’s been four days since the Northwest volleyball team has practiced or played together, but the skies dried up enough for the Lady Bruins to host a tri-match against Murray County and Rome on Tuesday.

Though the Lady Bruins were no doubt rusty, they managed to effectively put away both their Area 7-4A rivals and sweep the tri-match, beating the Lady Wolves 25-7, 25-15 and Lady Indians, 25-7, 25-15.

Murray County defeated Rome 25-16, 25-20 for the split.

Despite the lopsided wins for the Lady Bruins (16-7, 4-2), the state’s 10th-ranked team, according to GaSports.com, both players and coach Joe Pesca — who was filling in for Richard Taylor — noticed the team wasn’t playing up to its capabilities.

Taylor attended the tri-match but turned the coaching responsibilities over to Pesca for the night.

Lady Bruins senior outside hitter Christy Robinson — who last weekend committed to Samford (Birmingham, Ala.) University on a basketball scholarship — finished with seven kills on senior night. She believes the team could have played better.

“We didn’t play our best,” said Robinson, who along with most of the Lady Bruins starters, only played the first game of each match. “With all the distractions (weather) and no practice on Friday, it’s been tough.”

Pesca attributes Northwest’s sluggish play to communication issues.

“We played well, but we made quite a few mistakes,” he said. “In the second match, we had more balls hit the ground than we had digs, so we definitely have to work on that because our schedule gets tough quick. There was some lack of communication out there and people running into each other, and that bothered me.

“But we started to warm up a little and play better in the second game in the Murray County match.”

The Lady Indians (9-9, 1-4) handled Rome with ease, but hit a wall against their crosstown rivals. Murray County assistant coach Kim Richards noted improvement in her team.

“Overall, we played a lot better as a team,” Richards said. “We stayed up and focused against Rome and were able to do what we needed to do. The biggest thing versus Northwest was staying at the net and blocking. We finally realized that and were able to get a few in the second game. But our serves were nowhere near where they needed to be all day and we’ve got to focus on that and do better next time.”

The Lady Bruins were led by Stephanie Baker, who was 15 for 15 serving with two aces. Alex Warren was 14 of 15 on serves for four aces and added 10 digs, Adrienne Orem was 10 for 10 serving with five aces and Kelsey Kirk had nine kills.

The Lady Indians were led by Mirely Cabral’s 29 assists and a kill. Stephanie Douthitt had 24 assists and three digs, Amanda Suttles had five aces, two kills and three blocks, Cassie Quast’s 13 aces and a kill and Michaela Hill’s four aces, two blocks, a kill and a dig.
