Eighth grade
• Rome 22, Dalton 6: The Cougars’ season-opening drive resulted in a 5-yard touchdown run by Marvin Hill and gave Dalton a 6-0 lead that lasted all the way to half time, thanks to Leighton Reefe’s second-quarter interception, which he returned 40 yards. However, the Cougars could not capitalize with a score before the first half ended.
To open the second half, Rome returned the opening kickoff 95 yards to tie the game at 6. Rome then took advantage of a Dalton special teams miscue and sacked the punter on the Cougars’ 10-yard line.
Rome scored soon after to take a 14-6 lead and never looked back.
“I thought we came out ready to go in the first half,” Dalton coach John Patrick said. “At halftime, I felt we were in a good place. We just didn’t get the job done.
“But we’ll come back out on Thursday and work to get things turned around.”
Seventh grade
• Rome 14, Dalton 6: Sam Wilson’s 2-yard touchdown run capped a scoring drive that took up the entire first quarter and gave Dalton a 6-0 lead, but Rome stormed back to score 14 straight points to take the victory.
On defense, Dalton (0-1) had fumble recoveries from Josh Satterfield, Sam Dyer and Sidney Wheeler.
“We played a very athletic group from Rome,” Dalton coach Jeff Gazaway said. “Our effort was 100 percent.”

A shared success
(Misty Watson/The Daily Citizen) Dalton High’s Dante Thomas, left, and Caylor Summers, second from right, are congratulated by fellow senior Catamounts Scott Abernathy, second from left, and Tre Bonds. Thomas and Summers both had signing ceremonies in the Dalton High commons on Wednesday. Thomas, a defensive back, will play at Carson-Newman. Summers, who served as a manager the past three seasons, received a scholarship to fill the same role at Jacksonville State.
Dalton High’s Caylor Summers hasn’t been on the football field as a player since he was a freshman, becoming a team manager when injuries forced him to give up the game. The Catamounts’ Danté Thomas was such a shutdown defensive back in his final two seasons, most opposing coaches didn’t want their players on his part of the field.
