Prep roundup: Collins has hot round in victory

Southeast Whitfield golf coach Chad Murray has been optimistic since the season’s beginning that his Lady Raiders can steadily lower their scores in a march toward potential success at the Region 7-3A tournament.

So far, so good.

The Lady Raiders topped a pair of rivals in a nine-hole match Tuesday at Indian Trace in Chatsworth, firing an 86 that was five strokes better than Dalton’s score. Northwest Whitfield, whom the Lady Raiders finished ahead of for the first time this season, turned in a 95.

And Megan Collins earned medalist honors to lead the Lady Raiders, who are now 7-0 in nine-hole matches, via a breakout performance. The sophomore turned in a 1-over-par 37, her personal best in competition or practice, Murray said.

“She’s posted practice rounds of 41 and 42, but her lowest match round was a 44,” he said. “She just caught fire today. She had been struggling with her putting a little bit ... but she has really focused on putting, so that was the biggest hurdle she overcame today.

“She’s been averaging 44-45 in matches. And she’s just now starting to come on, because she’s a three-sport athlete who excels in volleyball and basketball, too.”

Southeast’s other counting round came from Carli Ledford, who turned in a 49 and has been battling back and forth with Katelyn Burke for the No. 2 spot this season. Burke shot a 53 Tuesday.

“Those two girls have really made a difference also,” Murray said.

Dalton’s scores came from Brendie Rockholt (40) and Molly Clark (51). The Lady Bruins got counting rounds from Turner Fordham (44) and Marlee Bingham (51).

Murray said this was the Lady Raiders’ fourth victory this season against Dalton. Southeast had previously finished behind Northwest at the Lady Conasauga Cup, a nine-hole tournament, and the Lady Catamount Invitational, an 18-hole tournament.

Dalton boys 2, Murray County 0: A lucky bounce off a Murray County defender and a second-half goal from Ramiro Huitanda pushed Dalton past Murray County in a Region 7-3A crossover match.

Dalton’s first score came off a crossing shot by Tiago Jesus which deflected off an Indian defender into the net. Keeper Tony Olvera and the defense helped the Cats (7-2) keep the Murray County (2-8-1) offense at bay.

Christian Heritage boys 2, Georgia Cumberland 1: Luke Jones found the net after being set up by Casey Carroll’s corner kick with 12 minutes to play, and the Lions (3-1) made the lead stand for a victory in a non-region victory against their visitors from Calhoun.

Christian Heritage held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to Nick Jang’s goal on an assist from Young Min, but Georgia Cumberland scored on a corner kick with 15 minutes to play in the second half. Andrew McEntyre, who’s filling in for senior keeper Brady Seehorn as he recovers from an injury, finished with 13 saves for the Lions.
