Coahulla Creek is just getting started with varsity football, but the second-year Whitfield County high school will be ahead of other area programs in at least one way for the 2012 season.
The Colts will be the first local team to hit the field for its preseason scrimmage against another school, welcoming Chattanooga’s Notre Dame to Coahulla Creek at 7 tonight.
Coahulla Creek went 8-2 while playing a junior varsity schedule in 2011, but the Colts are preparing for varsity competition this year in Region 5-3A. Coach Jared Hamlin’s squad will kick off the regular season in a non-region contest Aug. 31 at Murray County.
Other area teams will have their preseason scrimmages next week, although North Murray will hold its “Black and Gold” intrasquad scrimmage in front of fans at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Chatsworth.
On Aug. 16, Dalton will scrimmage Adairsville at Harmon Field. Four scrimmages involving local teams are set for the following night — Christian Heritage at Chattanooga Central, Murray County at Southeast Whitfield, Model at North Murray and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at Northwest Whitfield.
