Still plenty of kick

Colts storm back to spoil homecoming

CALHOUN — Coahulla Creek’s Erick Dominguez was everywhere at once in the Colts’ 26-14 win Friday night at Sonoraville.

Dominguez scored two touchdowns and picked off three passes in the win that ended a two-game losing skid for the Colts. It also gave Coahulla Creek a jump start in region play as the Colts improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Region 5-3A.

“It’s always big to get that first region win,” said Coahulla Creek coach Jared Hamlin, whose team suffered back-to-back losses to Gordon Lee and Christian Heritage. “I’m just proud of our kids for the way they fought tonight after having a couple of disappointing weeks. They came back stronger and got better at some things we needed to get better at.”

Old-fashioned football was good enough for the Colts on Friday.

“Defensively, we continued to play like we did in the second half last week, and we got better there,” Hamlin said. “But offensively, the key was that we got our running game going and we really did a good job running the football and being physical up front. That really allowed us to run some clock off and keep their offense off the field and keep our defense fresh.

“That’s what really helped us out. The offensive line came around and got physical tonight and got after it.”

The loss for Sonoraville came on the heels of a win over Model last week and the Phoenix put themselves in position to win against Coahulla Creek — they led 7-6 at halftime. But too many turnovers and missed opportunities, especially late in the game, spelled disaster.

Sonoraville had several chances to add more points, but came up short following a couple of missed field goals and two long touchdown runs that were negated on block-in-the-back penalties. A costly fumble on Sonoraville’s side of the field led to points for the Colts in the second half but the Phoenix trailed only 19-14 with 7:46 left in the game.

The Phoenix held Coahulla Creek on its next possession, but an interception by Dominguez on Sonoraville’s first play of its next drive all but sealed it. The Colts drove six plays, burning up roughly five minutes of the game clock and punched in the winning score on a 1-yard run by Cordarius Tarver.

Sonoraville’s Sam Wells and Clay Grisham both had interceptions for the Phoenix. Sonoraville was without the services of running back Jackson Murray, who could miss up to six weeks with a biceps injury.

Sonoraville’s Tyler Harris had two touchdown passes, one of which went to Thad Harris and the other to Matt Edgar.

Sonoraville’s defense stood tall most of the night. Facing constant blitz pressure from Sonoraville, Coahulla Creek wasn’t able to muster a lot of offense without the benefit of turnovers. The Colts’ defense was effective in pass coverage as well. Neither team gave up very much.

Sonoraville was coming off its first win of the season in a thriller over Model last week. In that game, Harris was 12-for-19 for 157 yards and a touchdown.
