Area softball roundup: Tough day on the diamond

In need of a victory to help its chances of making next week’s Region 6-A softball tournament, Christian Heritage instead suffered a frustrating loss Wednesday, falling 6-5 to Darlington in Rome.

The Lady Lions (6-16, 4-5 Sub-region 6A-A) trailed 3-0 after Darlington capitalized on three errors to score as many runs in the fourth inning, but Christian Heritage responded with a five-run fifth.

The rally started with a leadoff walk by Cara Griggs, and Rebecca Leonard’s double put Christian Heritage runners at second and third. Following a flyout to left field, Reagan Benedict drew a walk to load the bases for Micah McKinney, whose sacrifice fly to center scored Griggs.

Leonard came home on a wild pitch, and that set the stage for a three-run home run by Megan McKinney.

However, miscues in the field proved costly again in the sixth, when an errant throw on an attempt to catch a runner stealing third allowed the go-ahead run to score.

“We had our chances and competed, but we just came up a little short,” said Christian Heritage coach Mike Leonard, who was under the impression that a win against Darlington would have locked up a spot in the region tournament.

Instead, the Lady Lions are left waiting to see what happens with the rest of the sub-region — the top four teams advance to the region tourney — as they play their regular season finale today in a 6A-A matchup against Mount Zion-Carroll at Heritage Point.

Rebecca Leonard went 2-for-4 with a double and also pitched for Christian Heritage, allowing five hits and striking out seven in the fourth game in three days for the Lady Lions, who have just nine players on the team.

Benedict finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, while Megan McKinney and McDonald each went 2-for-4.

Adairsville 4, North Murray 1: Kara Deal and Hannah Hensley had the only hits for the Lady Mountaineers (9-14, 5-8 Region 5-3A), who committed six errors in the road loss.

Hensley also scored the team’s only run in the seventh and took the loss in the circle, allowing no earned runs — two in the second and two in the fourth — on three hits while striking out two.

Sonoraville 3, Coahulla Creek 0: In another Region 5-3A matchup, the Lady Colts (10-15, 6-7) also went quietly, with Allie Thompson and Nikki Hollis each managing a single for their team’s only hits in the loss at home.

Shelbe Dilbeck pitched all seven innings for Coahulla Creek, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
