Lady Cats prove to be tough hosts

Hannah Duffie shot a 7-over 79 on Saturday for medalist honors and led the Lady Catamounts to a victory in their own 10-team tournament at Dalton Golf and Country Club.

With Duffie’s teammate Brendi Rockholt posting an 88, the Lady Cats carded a 167 and beat Harrison by one shot for the team title. Westminster was third at 171.

Northwest Whitfield shot a 194 for sixth place and was led by Casey Truelove’s 84 and Taylor Boyd’s 110.

Southeast Whitfield carded a 201 for seventh place, with Megan Collins shooting 97 and Katelyn Burke 104.

Duffie, Harrison’s Sydney Conrad (81), Kennesaw Mountain’s Samantha Searles (81), Truelove and Woodward’s Haley Zagoria (84) were selected to the all-tournament team.

• At the LaFayette Invitational, Southeast Whitfield’s boys finished 13th in a 14-team field, shooting a 405. The Raiders were led by John Burns (94), Ryan Collins (97), Zach Harper (105) and Cameron Maynard (109).

• At the White County Invitational at Skitt Mountain, Northwest Whitfield shot 351, with Ben Harris leading the way with an 8-over 80. David Lomax posted an 84, Sam Speights a 91 and Conner Wilson 96.

• Dalton’s boys shot 310 and finished ninth in the Warrior Invitational, with Will Morrow carding a 74, Zac Coquerille 77, Dylan Coffey 78 and Chase Miller and William Duffie each shooting 81. Murray County was close behind, shooting a 315 for a 10th place finish in the 31-team field. The Indians were led by Dylan Langford (77), Tyler Simpson (77), Chase Jones (79) and Caleb Langford (82).

Varsity baseball

• Dalton 8, Chattanooga Christian 1: Trey Craig had two hits and drove in two runs and Brandon Dale struck out 10 in a five-hit complete game for the Catamounts (5-1). Stryker Brown went 2-for-3, including a double, with an RBI and Blake Raber added a two-run double in the Hixson (Tenn.) tournament action.

• Soddy Daisy 13, Dalton 3: The Catamounts (5-2) managed just three hits. Ben Wood took the loss, giving up nine runs (five earned) in two innings.

• Also at Hixson, the Murray County beat Columbia, 11-1, and lost to Central, 6-1, on Thursday and beat East Hamilton, 2-1, and Hixson, 12-6, on Friday. The Indians are now 6-3.

• Northwest Whitfield 6, North Paulding 0: The Bruins (6-4) won their Sub-region 7A-4A debut with a complete-game effort from Cody Jones, who allowed just three hits and a walk in seven innings.

Jones struck out four.

Zach Sloan was 1-for-2 with an RBI double, Hunter Key hit a two-run single, Bradley Stevenson had a two-run double and Nick Stavrow had an RBI single for Northwest.

Varsity soccer

• Northwest Whitfield boys 1, Heritage-Catoosa 1: Jorge Solarzano scored the Bruins’ goal, with an assist from Geovanni Villa.

The Bruins (3-3-1) outshot the Generals, 20-9, and keeper Oscar Solarzano had nine saves.

• Dalton boys 7, Woodland 1: In Sub-region 7A-4A play, the Catamounts (6-1-1, 4-0) got seven first-half goals. Angel Arellano scored two while Rolando Rosilla, Josue Torres, Ricky Rodriguez, Jose Garcia and Ivan Cruz each had one.

• Dalton boys 3, Sequoyah 0: In a Sub-region 7A-4A game played Friday in Canton, the Catamounts got goals from Rolando Rosillo, Jessy Gonzalez and Jose Garcia. Keeper Antonio Olvera had three saves for the shutout.

• Southeast Whitfield boys 2, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 0: In a Sub-region 6A-3A game, Ezequiel Nunez and Bernabe Rangel scored goals for the Raiders (7-2, 6-0). Cesar Maldonado had two saves for the shutout.

• Woodland-Bartow girls 3, Dalton 2 (penalty kicks): After a scoreless Sub-region 7A-4A match, the Lady Catamounts (3-3-1, 2-2) got penalty kicks from Nery Martinez and Yanet Hernandez in the losing effort. In goal, Julie Parham had nine saves in regulation and two in the penalty kick session.

• Christian Heritage girls 3, LaFayette Christian 1: The Lady Lions (2-1, 2-1 in GISA Region 4-2A) got goals from Rachel Gray, Marah McEntyre and Jessica Seehorn. Rachel Boyd had seven saves.

• LaGrange girls 4, Christian Heritage 1: On Friday, Marah McEntyre scored for CHS.

Varsity track

• In the Mohawk Invitational at Gordon Central, Northwest Whitfield’s girls finished third with 76 1/2 points, with three first-place finishes from Shelby Wilson in the 1,600 meeter with a time of 5 minutes, 48 seconds, Jenna Williams (800, 2:43.64) and Emily Payne (pole vault, 8 feet).

The Bruins finished ninth in the 11-team field and had no first-place finishes. Woodland won both boys and girls events.

JV baseball

• LaFayette 6, Northwest Whitfield 5: The Ramblers struck for five runs, only one was earned due to two errors, in the first inning against Bruins starter Austin Busby. Busby had a strikeout and allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Northwest committed six errors in the game.

Josh Swinford had two hits, including a two-run single.

• North Murray 9, River Ridge 3: Jacob Mays and Jordan Wells each had two hits and two RBIs for the Mountaineers (3-3). Ethan Lents and Robert Daly also had two hits apiece.

Gavin Ledford picked up the win, scattering five hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked three.

JV soccer

• Northwest Whitfield boys 6, Heritage-Catoosa 0: David Perez and Geovanni Aguero each scored two goals and Arturo Hernandez and Cesar Zuiga had one each. Aguero also had two assists for the Bruins (2-2).

Keepers Miguel Deandra and Damian Landra combined for the shutout.

9th baseball

• Northwest Whitfield 4, LaFayette 3: Wade Terrell went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Bruins (3-1). Brady Middleton had two two hits, one a double.

Tucker Sheram was the winning pitcher, working five innings and giving up five hits and three runs, with five strikeouts.

MS baseball

• New Hope 10, Bagley 0: In the Southeast Whitfield round robin, Diego Perralta was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Edwin Hernandez was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Tanner Cockburn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Kodiaks (7-0) in the six-inning game.

Michael Ward got the win, pitching three innings and striking out four, walking one and giving up no hits. 

• Valley Point 10, North Whitfield 1: The Green Waves (3-1) were led by Rhett Harper and Blake Foster, each of whom went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Harper got the win, pitching five innings and striking out eight, walking none and giving up a hit and a run. Blake got the save.

MS golf

• North Whitfield boys 216, New Hope 226: Tyler Lindsey led the Pioneers with an 11-over-par 47 over the 3,002-yard Indian Trace course. Brannon Wilson had a nine-hole 51, Alec Longmire 55 and Ian Conway 55. Tyler Linder led New Hope with a nine-hole 51 in the Friday match.

• New Hope girls 227, North Whitfield 235: Hagan Raughton led the Lady Kodiaks with a 54 and Abbi Tate and Dallas Coker each shot 58 for the Lady Pioneers.
