Cougars baseball wins big in opener

Dalton Middle School’s baseball team opened the season with a dominant win Monday, beating visiting Rome 15-0 in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule.

The Cougars tallied 14 hits, with Maddux Houghton leading the way with a 3-for-3 effort that included a double. Brock Nelson was 2-for-2 with a double and picked up the win on the mound, striking out four in two innings of work.

Cole Shelton was 2-for-3 with a triple, while Sam Stepp was 2-for-2 with a double.

Area middle school results are published each Monday and Thursday in The Daily Citizen. Coaches should send information to sports@daltoncitizen.com, with the final score, outstanding performers, team’s win-loss record and date and location of the competition included in the report.

Events that take place on Monday and Tuesday must be received by noon Wednesday for publication; events that take place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday must be received by noon Sunday for publication. Events reported after the deadline or without complete information may not be published.
