Nermin Delic’s college football odyssey has taken another turn.
According to a report on the Atlanta Journal-Consti-tution’s Georgia State blog on Tuesday, the NCAA denied the former Northwest Whit-field standout’s request to play this season for the Panthers.
Delic is a native of Bosnia whose family came to the United States when he was a child to leave the war-torn region behind. The 2010 Northwest graduate starred as a two-way end in high school, earning all-area, all-region and all-state honors as a senior before signing with the University of Kentucky.
He spent two years in Lexington, but played only his freshman season. He was redshirted last year after leaving the Wildcats during the summer of 2011 following several surgeries. He planned to sign to play college basketball in Georgia at the time, but ultimately returned to the Wildcats with the expectation of sitting out last fall but working his way back to the field.
That never happened, though, as Delic was dismissed for a violation of team rules, according to an April story in the Lexington Herald-Leader. Delic never specified what the violation was, but told The Daily Citizen this spring, “It’s solely my fault. It was something that had went down, and I hate the way things went down. All I can do is look forward now and make the most out of my opportunity at Georgia State.”
Delic will have two years of eligibility at Georgia State, but that won’t start until next season.
While players transferring from a Division I FBS school to another normally must sit out a season, transfers to FCS (formerly I-AA) schools from FBS schools can play immediately. However, Georgia State is in the first year of a two-year transition from FCS to FBS status and won’t be a full member until 2014.
Two other FBS transfers at Georgia State, Theo Agnew and Ronnie Bell, will be allowed to play this season. Delic told the AJC that the NCAA did not give him a reason for turning down his request to play.
