During their first season, the Coahulla Creek girls basketball team came close, but couldn’t get over the hump to snag a victory. To end 2012, the Lady Colts continued their losing ways, dropping their first 11 games of the 2012-13 season.
Now, they have a victory.
Macey Fossett scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Saturday as the Lady Colts recorded their first victory in the history of the program on the hardwood with a 62-48 win over Ridgeland.
“It’s the first win ever, and I told the girls to celebrate all they wanted,” Coahulla Creek coach Ryan Long said. “It was a great game by the girls. They executed well, and we are finally understanding what our roles are and how to close out games. Ridgeland is young, kind of like us, and it was a good matchup for both teams.”
The Lady Colts (1-11) were up by 11 at the end of the first half and built that lead in the second.
“We limited our turnovers and did a good job of rebounding,” Long said. “If we can do those two things, we will have a chance to get better and better.”
Nikki Ross also had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
• Dade County boys 81, Murray County 63: The Wolverines jumped out to an 11-point lead at halftime and held Murray County (7-7, 2-2 Region 7-2A) to single digits in the third to take the win.
Murray County had trailed 36-29 at the half and cut the Dade lead to three (38-35) when the Wolverines called timeout and then went on a 19-2 run to put the game away.
Brady Todd had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Martin Contreras had 14 points and Matthew Corbin added 10 points and seven rebounds.
• Dade County girls 71, Murray County 34: Ashlee Strong scored 14 points in the Lady Indians’ losing effort.
McKenzie Carroll added 10 points for a Murray County (5-9, 2-2 Region 7-2A) team that played near even aside from the second quarter. The Lady Indians trailed 14-10 after the first period, but 39-12 at halftime. Dade County led 54-26 after three quarters.
“They started lighting it up in the second quarter,” Murray County coach Michael Hill said.
• Christian Heritage JV boys 46, Trion 44: Evan Townsend led the way with 20 points, and Chase Tidwell added 10 for the Lions (9-3).
• Christian Heritage JV girls 42, Trion 19: Pressley Poag led the Lady Lions (6-3) with 20 points, while Hannah Long added eight points and eight rebounds. Autie Abernathy tallied seven points.
Swimming
• Dalton’s boys won a three-team meet at the Cobb Civic Center on Friday, scoring 196 points to finish first and ahead of Class 5A’s Sequoyah (165) and Class 6A’s Etowah (138).
The Lady Cats finished with 81 points and took third behind Etowah (271) and Sequoyah (158).
Dalton won first in the 200 medley relay (Ethan Young, Pierson Scarborough, Taylor Mathis fly, Taylor Dale; 1:41.23), 200 freestyle (Young in a state quallifying time of 1:54.29), 200 individual medley (Scarborough, 2:07.20), 50 freestyle (Mathis, 22.94), 100 butterfly (Dale, 56.84), 100 freestyle (Young, 49.79), 500 freestyle (Alan Trejo, 5:33.09), 200 freestyle relay (Sam Reeves, Chase Todd, Trejo, Michael O’Brien; 1:41.53), 100 backstroke (Dale, 57.47), 200 breaststroke (Scarborough, 1:52.66) and 400 freestyle relay (O’Brien, Scarborough, Mathis and Young; 3:34.66).
