Murray County’s Lady Indians came back to claim a two-game victory over North Murray in area volleyball action on Monday in Chatsworth.
The Lady Indians won the first game of the rivalry match, 25-21, and overcame a 22-17 deficit to take the second, 28-26.
“We gave away a lot of points,” said North Murray coach Mike Pritchett, whose Lady Mountaineers fell to 4-9 in their first year as a varsity program. “But it was close. I think everybody enjoyed watching the rivalry game. It didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but it was good volleyball.”
Both local teams were swept in the other leg of the tri-match by Gordon Lee. The Lady Trojans beat Murray County, 25-9, 25-15, and North Murray fell to Gordon Lee, 25-13, 25-8.
Murray County’s Mirely Cabral finished the night with 24 assists and 10 digs and Chelsea Keller added 10 digs.
North Murray’s Casey Chapman had 11 attacks against Gordon Lee and Iliana Munguia added eight digs. Hannah Aberdelerazzaq had 11 digs in the loss to the Lady Trojans and 14 against Murray County, when Grace Phillips added 13 attacks and 11 digs.
Gordon Lee’s junior varsity team beat Murray County, 25-14, 25-12. North Murray swept its JV match with the Lady Indians, 25-10, 25-22.
Varsity softball
• Pickens 7, Dalton 6: The Lady Dragons scored three earned runs to edge the Lady Catamounts in Jasper as they made up a game rained out last Thursday.
Carson Hagin had three hits, including two doubles for Dalton (1-4, 1-1 Region 7-3A), while Dennise Cisneros also had three hits. Pickens benefited from eight walks and two errors by Dalton.
• Gordon Lee 5, Northwest Whitfield 1: Ashley Conner went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Amy Shampo, Bayli Cruse and Macy Weeks had the only other hits — each singled — for the Lady Bruins (4-5) as they fell in non-region action in Tunnel Hill.
Allison Manis took the loss, starting and going five innings with three walks and a strikeout while allowing four hits. Emily Boyd struck out four, walked one and gave up a pair of hits in two innings of relief.
In the most recent Ga.PrepCountry.com coaches polls, Gordon Lee (8-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class A and Northwest is No. 7 in Class 4A.
In a 5-0 win for Gordon Lee in JV action, Mallory Souther and Haley Reece had the Lady Bruins’ only hits.

• Northwest 31, Dalton 8: The Bruins opened their season with the road win at Harmon Field.
The Cats (0-1) closed the deficit to 16-8 in the second quarter, but Northwest added two more scores to close out the game.
Hunter Williams threw for 84 yards and completed a touchdown pass to Andy Whisenant. Williams also rushed for 30 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown run. He also added one two-point conversion run and threw a two-point conversion pass to Dylan Joyce, who also caught a touchdown pass from Tyler Clayton.
Tevin Whisenant ran for a 56-yard touchdown, Jacob Webb ran in a two-point conversion and Miguel Villa closed out the scoring, converting a PAT after the final touchdown.
Middle school softball
• Gladden 10, Bagley 8: Shea Pendley homered twice and drove in four runs, while Lindsey Dunn had three hits, including a double, and picked up the win inside the circle to lead the Lady Warriors (1-1) past their intracounty rivals.
Other leading hitters for Gladden: Whitney Gribble (three hits, four RBIs), Cassidy Callahan (two hits, RBI), Aubrie Osborne (two hits, including a double) and Chloe Brown (RBI). Dunn struck out two and walked two while giving up 13 hits.
Bailey Sutton, who took the loss for Bagley, had three hits, as did Hannah Heath and Hadley Young, whose effort at the plate included a double. Amber Bandy added a single and a triple and Megan Pittman had a pair of singles for Bagley (0-2).
