The awakening bats

Raber homer ignites Cats in 4-2 victory

DALTON — Blake Raber’s two-run homer in the fourth inning awoke Dalton High’s bats on Tuesday and the Catamounts went on to a 4-2 non-region baseball victory over visiting LaFayette.

The Cats (2-1) had done little against Ramblers pitching for three innings. After Raber’s homer, Mitch Townsend singled and stole second and scored on Alex Blackwell’s single to cap the inning.

In the fifth, Stryker Brown drew one of his three intentional walks and moved to second on Colton Kinnamon’s fielder’s choice and scored on Raber’s single. The Cats finished with seven hits.

“Early on I thought we were a little tentative at the plate,” Dalton coach Bobby Brotherton said. “Then Raber unloaded on one and we came alive and did a pretty good job after that.”

Will Kiker worked six innings and picked up the win. Kiker gave up two runs — one in the third and one in the sixth — and six hits. He struck out four and walked one. Alex Roberts pitched the seventh and struck out three to notch the save on a cold, windy night.

“Kiker did a good job on the mound and Alex closed them down in the seventh,” Brotherton said. “We just need to keeping playing and playing and playing, just like everybody else around here.”
