Middle School Roundup: NH sweeps girls titles

For the second straight year, the group of girls playing in their final year at New Hope Middle School have gone undefeated through the Whitfield County Middle School Athletic League to claim the championship on Saturday at Valley Point Middle.

Peyton Maret and Lexi Storey each scored 12 points to lead the Lady Kodiaks to a 44-26 win over Valley Point in the postseason tournament to cap a season in which New Hope was 18-3 overall and 14-0 against league competition. As seventh-graders, the same group went undefeated to capture the league title. Whitney Brooker had eight points to help push the Lady Kodiaks past the Lady Green Waves.

Sydney Covington scored 13 points to lead the way for Valley Points, and Emily Beck finished with eight.

New Hope advanced to the title game with a 42-24 win over North Whitfield in the semifinals. Storey led all scorers with 15 points, and Maret added nine. The Lady Pioneers were led by Bethany Goodwin’s nine points.

• Seventh-grade girls championship: Aubrey Young scored 14 points as New Hope capped an undefeated league schedule with a 41-21 victory over Westside in the tournament finals. Kylee Ward and Bria Clemmons each had 10 points in the win as the Lady Kodiaks finished the year with an 18-1 overall record.

New Hope advanced to the finals with a 27-11 win over Bagley in the semifinals on Thursday. Young had nine points to lead the way, and Clemmons added eight. Katelyn Crumbley finished with seven points to lead the Lady Braves (7-6).

Westside advanced to the title game with an 18-14 win over Valley Point on Thursday. Tori Ingram had seven points to lead the Lady Rockets, while Angeles Altamirano had seven points for the Lady Green Waves.

• Eighth-grade boys championship: Ty Pendley scored a game-high 17 points and North Whitfield won back-to-back titles with a 40-36 victory over Westside in the tournament finals. Alex Fisher and Josue Dominguez each had six points to help lead the Pioneers to the come-from-behind victory after Westside took the lead in the third quarter.

“It was a great game by two really good teams,” North Whitfield coach Jody Bacchus said. “We have played them six times in the past two years, and the games are always tight. I am so proud of my guys. Coahulla Creek is getting a great group of kids.”

Jaco Asbury led the Rockets with 14 points.

The championship results of the seventh-grade boys tournament were not reported to The Daily Citizen before Sunday’s deadline.

In other middle school action:

• Westside seventh-grade boys 53, Bagley 40: Brody Frazier and Blake Davis combined for 30 points, but wasn’t enough for the Braves to advance past Westside. Frazier finished with 16 points, and Davis added 14 for Bagley (6-7).

• Westside eighth-grade boys 43, Bagley 40: Bagley outscored the Rockets 17-5 in the fourth quarter, but Westside was able to hold the Braves off for the win. Jordan Couch and Lucas Sexton each scored 12 points for Bagley (6-7), while Andrew Hooker added eight.

• Christian Heritage varsity boys 40, St. Jude 19: John Lewallen led the way for the Lions (10-3) with 10 points, and Tyson Cooper added eight in the win over St. Jude on Thursday.

• Christian Heritage varsity boys 33, Boyd Buchannah 30: Lewallen was the leading scorer with 12 points, and Cooper finished with seven as the Lions won on the road on Tuesday.
