Extra frames needed for Creek to top Lady Lions

Locked in a classic pitcher’s duel, Coahulla Creek’s Shelbe Dilbeck and Christian Heritage’s Rebecca Leonard matched each other throughout the night in a game what would need extra innings to decide it.

But in the end, Dilbeck had one more strikeout and one more run.

In the first meeting between the two schools and the first softball game of the year for the host Lady Colts, Haley Reece scored the game-winner in the ninth to give the Coahulla Creek a 6-5 victory over the Lady Lions on Thursday.

“It was a tough game and both teams played really hard,” Lady Colts coach Rhett Parrott said. “We were able to just scratch one out in the end. They all battled hard. It looked like Christian Heritage had the game put away, and we scored on a wild pitch. It was tough.”

Coahulla Creek led 3-1 in the top of the seventh when Christian Heritage scored two to push the game to the international tiebreaker rules. The Lady Lions scored in the top of the eighth and Coahulla Creek answered. The same thing happened in the ninth before Reece was able to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch for the win.

Dilbeck struck out 13 and had just one walk while allowing three earned runs for the Lady Colts (1-0). Emily Banks drove in a pair of runs and Dilbeck had an RBI as well as both players went 2-for-4. Reese was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

For Christian Heritage (0-3), Leonard was the tough-luck loser on the mound despite striking out 12.

Julia McDonald went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Reagan Benedict added a pair of hits.

• Ringgold 6, North Murray 3: Megan Pittman had a triple and a double and Baylee Sutton had an RBI single in the fifth, but that was all the offense the Lady Mountaineers could muster in the Region 5-3A contest.

Pittman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but other than Sutton no North Murray player managed a hit, and five errors led to four unearned runs to give Ringgold the victory. Lady Tigers pitchers struck out 10 batters in the game.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities in the game,” coach Daphne Winkler said. “We had bases loaded with one out in the fourth and couldn’t get a hit or bring in a run. Maybe this will help wake us up a little bit.”

Hannah Hensley (1-1) took the loss of the mound, striking out six, giving up six hits and walking five. The Lady Mountaineers (1-1, 1-1 Region 5-3A) play in the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Invitationa starting today at the Jack Mattox Complex in Ringgold.

Volleyball

• Southeast Whitfield, ranked No. 4 in the GaPrepCountry.com/GACA Class 4A coaches Poll, started the season off with a bang against a pair of local rivals, sweeping Coahulla Creek and Christian Heritage.

The Lady Raiders beat the host Lady Colts 25-14, 25-15 and topped the Lady Lions 25-13, 25-11.

Christian Heritage topped Coahulla Creek in three games, winning 25-21, 23-25, 15-10.

Southeast senior Hannah Graham led the way with 36 assists, seven digs and three blocks from her setter position, while junior middle hitter Wendy Perez finished with 22 kills, 11 digs and 5 1/2 blocks.

Megan Collins, The Daily Citizen’s All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year for 2011, had 10 kills and 12 digs, while Makayla Burse was 24 of 24 serving with six aces and 16 digs.

“We did what we wanted to, which was get some wins,” Southeast coach Jake Dickey said. “We had some nerves in the beginning, but overall, we played well. As a coach you always want to do better, but you can’t complain about a pair of wins to start the year.”

Savannah Roberson led Christian Heritage (1-1) to its first GHSA win in any sport with 15 kills and six blocks.

For Coahulla Creek (0-4), Becca Bailey had 17 assists and three aces on the night, while Taylor Ogle had five kills and five digs.

• Northwest Whitfield stretched host Ringgold to three games but ended the night with a pair of losses in a tri-match.

The Lady Bruins (1-3) took the first game 25-20 against Ringgold, but the Lady Tigers won 26-24 and 15-11 to take the win. In the other match against Gordon Lee, the Lady Bruins lost 25-15, 25-14.

Sarah Thomas had 11 kills, and Shelby Douglas finished with 13 digs.

• Results from North Murray’s tri-match at home against Cherokee and Douglas County and Murray County’s tri-match at home against Model and Ridgeland were not reported to The Daily Citizen.

JV volleyball

• Allison Hamlin and Rana Mashburn combined for 11 aces and Angie Purkey had six assists as Southeast beat Coahulla Creek 25-17, 19-25, 28-26.

• After starting the season with wins over Dalton and Coahulla Creek, Northwest dropped a pair of matches in Ringgold. The Lady Tigers won 25-28, 25-20, and Northwest fell to Gordon Lee 25-15, 25-14. Lauren Smith had three aces to lead the Lady Bruins.
