ROME —
Christian Heritage lost 40-16 on the road Friday to Rome’s Model in the Lions’ first GHSA game.
The Lions had eight turnovers, six in the first half, which played the biggest factor in a game where Christian Heritage outgained Model 315-269.
“We outgained them,” Lions coach Preston Poag said. “We had more yards than they had. I’ve never seen so many turnovers in a game. We’ve got to do a better job protecting the ball.”
The score was 27-9 at halftime, and Model scored on the last play of the game.
“We were in it,” Poag said. “We just kept turning the ball over. In the first half, our defense was on the field the whole time because we kept giving up possession.”
The Lions got touchdowns from Herschel Beene on a 50-yard fumble recovery and a 45-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Brown to Will Fischer.
Brown went 17 for 29 for 213 yards and one touchdown to lead the Lions. Jake Stokes had nine carries for 45 yards, Fischer had six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Christian Heritage had 213 yards passing and 102 rushing while Model had only 92 through the air and 177 on the ground.
