Lady Raiders romp past Ramblers
Three players scored in double figures as Southeast Whitfield’s girls harassed LaFayette into numerous mistakes and rolled to a 66-43 Sub-region 6A-3A basketball victory Tuesday night in LaFayette.
Briana Sosebee led the Lady Raiders’ attack with a game-high 18 points and added 12 rebounds, five steals and five assists.
“We played really well as a team,” Southeast coach Elizabeth Crane said. “We hustled up and down the floor and got some easy breaks on the other end from our steals. Everybody played and all but three players scored.”
Danielle Pearson scored 16 points for the Lady Raiders (11-9, 6-1 in 6A-3A) and Haley Lock had 10 points, five steals and five assists.
“We jumped on them pretty quick,” said Crane, whose team led 23-7 after one quarter and 35-22 at halftime.
Ashley Eady led LaFayette with 12 points.
• Northwest Whitfield girls 73, Cass 28: Lady Bruins starters played sparingly and then turned the Region 7-4A game over to reserves as substitute Taylor Baker, a sophomore guard/forward, responded with a game-high 13 points.
“The starters probably played 13-14 minutes,” Northwest coach Margaret Stockburger said. “Everybody else got to play, everybody scored and that was good.”
Quaneisha McCurty had 12 points and four rebounds in limited playing time and Baleigh Coley scored 11 points. Christy Robinson had four rebounds and four steals and Emily Trew four assists.
The victory stretched the winning streak to 18 games for the Lady Bruins (19-2, 10-0).
• Christian Heritage girls 82, Furtah Prep 19: Maggie Peeples led four scorers in double figures as the Lady Lions (17-3, 9-2 Georgia Independent School Association Region 4-2A) won easily.
Peeples scored 19 points and had nine assists. Kathryn Green added 13 points and five rebounds, Ann Marie Massengale had 12 points and seven rebounds and Caty Nagel finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
“We pressed some and pushed the ball down the floor for a good open shot,” Lady Lions coach Heather Lowery said. “As a team, we had 32 assists and shot really well.”
The Lady Lions made 37 of 68 shots for 54.4 percent from the field in the game.
Maci Lebeouf scored 17 points for Furtah Prep.
• Cass boys 56, Northwest 55: The Colonels’ Terris Batiste made a 12-foot jump shot after an in-bounds pass with four seconds left in the game for the Region 7-4A victory.
The Bruins (14-7, 5-5) were unable to get a shot off on the other end.
“We led the whole game except for one shot and that’s the one that mattered,” Northwest coach Ryan Richards said.
“That was the only time Cass led. And this was the best road game we’ve played this season. It was 32 minutes of good basketball and we hadn’t done that this season.”
Alex Thames led the Bruins with 13 points, Baker Chiddester had 11 and Nermin Delic finished with 10.
Batiste, Chase Stephens and Henry Shepard all had 10 points for the Colonels.
• Furtah Prep boys 66, Christian Heritage 64: A 3-point shot with 35 seconds remaining in the game gave Furtah a one-point lead, the visitors made one free throw in the final seconds and Landon McClure’s 3-point attempt “just missed” at the buzzer, Lions coach Chad Woodson said.
“We led most of the way,” Woodson said. “In fact, we were up by 10 points at one time and we got in foul trouble. Terrell Wilson and Will Clark fouled out in the final five minutes.”
Wilson led the Lions (12-8, 7-4) with 17 points, Clark added 16 and McClure and Michael McKinney each had 10.
Kelby Kitson led Furtah with 28 points and Demetrius Dorsey added 25.
• Southeast boys coach Josh Carter did not return a message left on his cell phone seeking results of the Raiders’ game against LaFayette.
