Dolphins hold lead at City Meet

The Dalton Dolphins are halfway to their first City Meet title in six years, but the local youth swim team has some surprising company in its chase for the Chattanooga Area Swim League’s postseason championship.

Dalton, which had 11 first-place finishes Friday, tallied 1,056 points on the opening day of the meet at the Arlene Crye Municipal Pool in Fort Oglethorpe. The Dolphins are hoping to add to their accolades for the summer, which already include the regular-season title for the Blue Division, the highest level in the CASL.

But Tennessee’s Ooltewah Tidal Waves, who went 8-0 to win the CASL’s second-tier Red Division, are second with 917 points as the meet enters its final day. Behind them are Blue Division runner-up Stuart Heights of Chattanooga (716) and Tennessee’s Signal Mountain (716), which finished third in the Blue Division.

“I thought our main competition would be Stuart Heights and Signal Mountain,” Dolphins coach Charles Todd said. “Ooltewah threw a curveball in there. We’re not in the same division, so I don’t ever see them swim, but they’re the surprise team right now.”

Dalton’s Taylor Dale, who competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials last month, broke his own City Meet record in the 100-yard individual medley. He turned in a time of 51.94 seconds to erase his previous mark of 52.29.

Todd said he expects a strong performance from his team today, when the swims will include the backstroke and butterfly, which the coach called some of the best events for the Dolphins.

The meet’s second set of finals are set for 6:30 p.m.
