Foster flips pick

Standout LB changes his mind

One of the highly touted recruits coming to Dalton for this weekend’s Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship changed states earlier this year.

Now he is switching between rival colleges.

Reuben Foster, a top-ranked linebacker who will play his senior season at Alabama’s Auburn High, flipped his verbal commitment Thursday from the University of Alabama to Auburn University, according to multiple reports.

According to CBS Sports and ESPN, Foster held a press conference at his high school announcing the decision sure to create talk among Iron Bowl fans. Foster gave a verbal commitment to the Crimson Tide last summer around this time.

A post on the Southeastern Conference blog at espn.com speculated that Alabama’s depth at linebacker might have made a difference in Foster’s choice.

“I have a lot of respect for the Alabama people — the coaches and all of the other people and the fans,” Foster said. “But at the end of the day, I feel like Auburn University is the place for me and my family. It has the best situation for me and my family.

“I am 100 percent confident with my final decision.”

Foster — who transferred from Georgia’s Troup County High to Auburn High during the offseason after Troup coach Charles Flowers was fired — is the No. 1-ranked prep middle linebacker by a number of recruiting sources, including Scout, Rivals and 247Sports. MaxPreps ranks him the No. 3 overall player in the Class of 2013.

Scholarship offers and commitments are non-binding per NCAA rules, so Foster can change his status as many times as he wants leading up to national signing day in February. According to CBS Sports, the University of Georgia is also recruiting Foster.

Auburn High is in Pool C for the Southeastern, which is set for Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers will play seven games Saturday at James Brown Park.

Their first game is at 12:40 p.m. against Southeast Whitfield, followed by games against Griffin High (1:20 p.m.), Martin Luther King Jr. (2:40 p.m.), Bob Jones “B” (4 p.m.), Cartersville (7:20 p.m.), Karns of Knoxville, Tenn., (8:40 p.m.) and Kentucky’s Murray (10 p.m.).
