ALBANY —
Chatsworth’s Colby Hipp fell out of contention Tuesday at the Georgia Junior Championship, but he survived the cut a year after missing it at the 54-hole Georgia State Golf Association event.
Hipp, who opened with a 1-under-par 71 on Monday at Albany’s Doublegate Country Club and started Tuesday with a share of fourth place, shot a 79 in the second round. He’s tied for 29th entering today’s final round and is one of 70 players who made the 36-hole cut at 11-over-par.
He’s the first area player to advance to the tournament’s final round in two years. Along with Rocky Face’s Tucker Snipes, he was the only local player who played in last year’s event.
Snipes, who shot 82-77 — 159 this year, missed the cut along with Rocky Face’s Ethan Hayes (85-79 — 164), Chatsworth’s Christoph Kazmeirski (86-84 — 170), Cohutta’s Silas Ledford (86-88 — 174) and Dalton’s Patrick Sims, who withdrew after opening with a 79.
Leading the tournament is Duluth’s Andy Shim, who followed Monday’s 66 with a 69. Augusta’s Greyson Sigg — the 2011 winner — is in second, seven shots back, and Martinez’s Emmanuel Kountakis is third at eight shots back. Griffin’s Tye Waller and Marietta’s Adam Wright are at par and round out the top five.
The top eight finishers will have a spot in the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge match, scheduled for later this summer. Four players are tied for sixth at 1 over, five strokes ahead of Hipp.
