After scoring in double digits in four of its first five games, Northwest Whitfield’s baseball team finds itself in a sudden scoring slump with just five runs in the past three games.
Trouble bringing home baserunners cost the Bruins on Wednesday in a 5-2 non-region loss at Heritage-Catoosa.
Northwest (5-3) led 2-1 going into the fifth inning — Heritage scored its first run in the first inning, while the Bruins rallied for two runs in the fourth — but couldn’t come back after giving up a pair of runs to the Generals in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bruins left two runners stranded in the second, fourth and fifth innings and also left what would have been the tying run at the time stranded on third in the sixth.
“We had plenty of chances,” Northwest coach Todd Middleton said. “We just didn’t capitalize.”
Nick Sullivan was 2-for-2 with a double, Cody Jones was 2-for-2 with a double, Hogan Hughes had an RBI single and Hunter Key had a hit and drove in a run for Northwest, which collected seven total hits.
Jordan Darnell started on the mound and went five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.
“I was more disappointed with some of the intangible things tonight than the physical,” Middleton said. “Jordan pitched well enough to win, we just didn’t get the hits when we needed them.”
Varsity tennis
• Murray County boys 5, Cass 0: The Indians swept their way to the Region 7-4A victory with dominant wins in all five matches.
In singles, the victories came from No. 1 Will Ross, 6-1, 6-2, No. 2 Zach Davis, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Noah Cleary, 6-1, 6-1. Doubles wins were provided by Beau Booth and Andrew Miles at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, and Chris Tate and Brandon Garcia at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.
The Indians improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in region play.
Murray County’s girls match against Cass was halted with only one match completed due to rain and will be finished today starting at 4:30 p.m.
Soccer
• Murray County split a pair of boys soccer matches in non-region play at Calhoun, winning 4-1 in junior varsity action and falling 2-0 in varsity competition.
In the JV victory, the Indians (3-2) were led by Ivan Capistran, who had a goal and an assist. Victor Tun, Enrique Ruiz and Diego Iturbero had the other goals.
Umberto Alvarez and Daniel Paniagua split time in goal, with Paniagua posting a shutout in second-half duty.
The varsity Indians fell to 1-3-1.
