When decorated Dalton High swimmer Taylor Dale graduates next spring, it looks like someone is ready to take his place.
Ethan Young helped lead the Carpet Capital Aquatics Club to a second-place finish in the state by capturing four events at the Georgia 14 and Under Long Course State Championship this past weekend at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Young, who will be a freshman at Dalton this year, won for the Makos in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and also claimed first in the 100 and 200 backstroke. He also finished third in the 200 individual medley.
“He has kind of established himself as the King of his age group,” CCAC coach Olga Davis said. “If he isn’t winning, people want to know what is wrong. I would say that most of our swimmers really moved up the ladder this weekend.”
Young capped off Friday night with a come-from-behind victory in the 200 butterfly to take a win by one hundredth of a second with a time of 2:10.01. His time of 58.30 in the 100 butterfly, 2:10.52 in the 200 backstroke and 59.04 in the 100 backstroke helped guide the Makos to the impressive finish.
One of those teams moving up that ladder was the 12-and-under team of Tyler Stephenson, Raul Valdez, Alex Mashburn and Jonathan Shaheen. Even though the team didn’t win overall titles, the team set new CCAC records in the 400 and 200 freestyle relay and the 400 and 200 individual medley.
Shaheeen was second overall in the mile, battling back after his goggles came off when he dove into the pool. He finished with a time of 21:38.90. Valdez was fourth overall in the 200 backstroke, setting a new club record with a time of 1:11.90. He was sixth overall in the 100 (1:03.79). Stephenson’s best individual finish came in the 200 breaststroke with a seventh-place finish with a 3:09.75 time. He was eighth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 40 seconds flat, and was time in the 100 at 1:28.59.
Hollie Porter had a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:53.15), and she had a top-15 finish in the 200 backstroke. Alex Masburn was 15th overall in the 200 backstroke.
Hannah Smith, Abby O’Ferrell, Oscar Chenard and Emilio Valdez also qualified for the state meet for the Makos.
