Dalton splits with Murray

Dalton and Murray County split a pair of matches in Chatsworth on Friday in Region 7-4A tennis competition, with the Catamounts winning, 3-2, and the Lady Indians coming out on top by the same score.

Dalton and Murray County split a pair of matches in Chatsworth on Friday in Region 7-4A tennis competition, with the Catamounts winning, 3-2, and the Lady Indians coming out on top by the same score.

“We were down and found out what we needed to do to win,” Dalton coach David Hilley said. “Anytime Dalton and Murray County play in anything, neither wants to lose to the other.”

The Cats (6-1, 2-0 in 7-4A) got wins from No. 1 Hunter Carson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, No. 3 Blake Garrett, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 2 doubles B.J. Rowland and Hepin Patel 7-6 (4), 6-2. The Indians (3-3, 2-2) got wins from No. 2 Zach Davis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 1 doubles Beau Booth and Andrew Miles (6-2, 6-1).

The Lady Indians (4-2, 2-2) got wins from No. 1 Cassie Quast, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4), No. 2 Katie Quast, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5 and No. 3 Jade Mathis, 6-1, 6-3.

“We’re really proud of the girls,” Murray County coach Coulter Redding said. “The girls’ singles players are our strength.”

The Lady Cats (5-2, 1-1) got wins from No. 1 doubles Malaka Awad and McKenzie Carlisi, 6-2, 6-0, and No. 2 doubles Clara Norfleet and Vivian Butler, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

• North Murray boys 3, Southeast Whitfield 2: Winners for the Mountaineers (3-3) in the Thursday match were No. 3 Ross Whitman 6-1, 6-0, No. 1 doubles Mark Lents and Alex Ellis 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 and No. 2 doubles Jacob Ledford and Wesley Ross 6-1, 6-2.

• Southeast girls 4, North Murray 1: The lone winner for the Lady Mountaineers (1-5) was No. 2 doubles Andrea Dunn and Bailey Douthitt 6-3, 6-2.

Varsity baseball

• On Thursday, Dalton opened the Hixson Tournament with two wins at Red Bank High (Tenn.), the first an 11-0 thumping of Sale Creek and the other a 5-4 victory over host Red Bank in 11 innings.

Against Sale Creek, Will Erwin pitched a complete game — the contest was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule — giving up a hit and a walk and striking out five. Stryker Brown and Ben Wood each had three RBIs for the visiting Catamounts and Tate Howell had two RBIs.

Against Red Bank, the Cats, playing as the home team, scored in the bottom of the eighth when Dalton’s Colton Kinnamon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Kinnamon pitched seven innings and struck out 13 while giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks in a no decision. Will Kiker pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Brown, Blake Raber and Mitch Townsend each had two hits and Brown led Dalton with two RBIs.

After taking the day off Friday, the Cats (4-1) will resume tournament play today against Chattanooga Christian at Red Bank at 11:00 a.m. before traveling to Soddy Daisy High to play the host school at 4 p.m. The home team for both games will be decided by a coinflip.

• Christian Heritage 16, LaGrange 7: In LaGrange, Michael McKinney went 4-for-4 with an RBI and pitched 6 1/3 innings, walking none, striking out five and giving up five runs (one earned) on nine hits to pick up the win for the Lions (2-2). Parmelee Ward led the Lions with five RBIs and Landon McClure and Rollins Jolly each scored three runs and had two hits. Jolly added two RBIs and McClure and Mason Sikes each had one RBI.

Varsity soccer

• Northwest Whitfield boys 4, Murray County 0: Geovanni Villa scored three goals to lead the Bruins (3-3, 2-1 Sub-region 7A-4A). Andreas Valencia scored the fourth goal. Emmanuel Pacheco, Joseph Torres, Fabian Hernandez and Jose Delcid were credited with assists. Keepers Oscar Solarzano and Miguel Deanda combined for the shutout and the Bruins outshot the Indians, 19-10.

• Pinecrest 5, Christian Heritage 1: In GISA league play, the Lions’ (0-2, 0-2) lone goal came from Nick Jang. Brady Seehorn had 25 saves in the losing effort.

• Sequoyah girls 2, Dalton 0: Julie Parham had 14 saves in the losing effort for the Lady Catamounts (3-2-1, 2-1 in Region 7-4A).

• Northwest Whitfield girls 1, Murray County 0: Sarah Kilgore and Lucero Velazquez combined for 12 saves for the Lady Indians (0-5, 0-2).

Varsity softball

• Lookout Valley (Tenn.) 8, Christian Heritage 1: Abby Stuckey had the Lady Lions’ (0-2) lone RBI, which scored Becca Leonard. Shelby Wilbanks took the loss, giving up one run in two innings on two hits and three walks while striking out one.

JV baseball

• LFO 4, Northwest Whitfield 2: The Warriors scored four unearned runs off four Bruin errors in the fourth inning. For the game, Northwest had six errors. Josh Swinford took the loss, allowing two hits and striking out six in four innings.

Tyler Baker had a double and a stolen base for the Bruins (2-1).

JV soccer

• North Murray boys 6, LaFayette 5: The Mountaineers (3-3) got two goals from Guilermo Cruz and one each from Freddy Urbina, Junior Lopez, Jose Diaz and Christian Davalos in a game decided on penalty kicks.

9th baseball

• Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 4, Northwest Whitfield 2: The Bruins’ Brady Middleton, Blake Phillips and Wade Terrell all went 2-for-3. A.J. Orozco was the losing pitcher. He gave up six hits and four runs over four innings.

MS baseball

• Valley Point 11, Westside 4: In the Southeast Whitfield round robin, the Green Waves (3-1) were led by Blake Foster, who was 3-for-3, and Maverick Curtis and Laroque King, who were both 2-for-3. Abram Stanley got the win in relief, pitching two innings and giving up no runs and no hits, striking out three and walking four.

• New Hope 15, Eastbrook 0: Edwin Hernandez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Kodiaks (6-0) in the Southeast Whitfield round robin. Diego Paralta had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Tanner Cockburn had two hits and two RBIs. Lane Bramblett was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts in four innings.

• Dalton 7th 11, Silverdale Academy 1: Ty Pendley and Tyler Britton each went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Cougars (3-1). Charlie Martin struck out six and was the winning pitcher.

• Dalton 8th 17, Silverdale Academy 0: Jake Roberts went 3-for-4 and pitched a no-hitter with three strikeouts over three innings for the Cougars (4-0). Grant Sane and Hunter Nelson each had two hits, including a double, in the Cougars’ 15-hit attack.

MS soccer

• North Whitfield girls 3, Westside 0: Regina Pacheco scored three goals and Courtney Pendergrass and Daniella Padron each had an assist for the Lady Pioneers (3-0) on Thursday.

MS softball

• Silverdale 9, Christian 8: The Lady Lions (4-0) were led by Ransley DeFoor, who was 3-for-4 with three runs and Sarah Massengill, who was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Megan McKinney took the loss in a complete-game effort, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six.

• Christian Heritage 11, Copper Basin 0: On Thursday, Megan McKinney pitched a three-inning no-hitter and struck out nine. Sarah Massengale drove in a run and scored twice for the Lady Lions (3-0) and Ransley Defoor had a hit and two runs.

MS tennis

• Christian Heritage girls 8, Berean 1: No. 1 Tegan McEntire won, 8-0, No. 3 Courtney Pirkle, 8-2, No. 4 Sarah Pippin, 8-3, No. 5 Kacie Greggs, 8-0 and No. 6 Erin Grace White, 8-0 for the Lady Lions (2-0). No. 1 doubles McEntire-Pirkle won, 8-4, No. 2 Sydney White-Pippin, 8-5 and No. 3 Erin Grae White-Greggs, 8-1.

MS track

• Eastbrook boys 77.5, Valley Point 67, Gladden 42.5, Bagley 28: At Southeast Whitfield, first place finishers for the Mustangs were Austin Coker in the 800 meter with a time of 2 minutes, 27 seconds, David Gonzales (400, 1:01), Chauncey Hernandez (long jump, 16 feet, five inches), Josh Tucker (triple jump, 31-6) and Austin Allen (5-4). First place finishers for the Green Waves were Alex Clowers (200, 23.78; 100, 11.19), Kyle Parrish (discus, 105 -2; shotput, 42-5), the 4x400 relay team (4:19) and the 4x100 relay team  (51.6).

• Valley Point girls 107, Eastbrook 56, Bagley 38, Gladden 8: First place finishers for the Lady Green Waves were Isabel Salinas (800, 2:46; 1,600, 6:16), Tascha Bridges (long jump, 13-10; 100, 19:38), Erin Harden (shotput, 25-4), Yolanda Melgarejo (high jump, 4-2), Tilea West and Angie Purkey (400, 1:10), the 4x400 relay (4:55), the 4x200 relay (2:11) and the 4x100 relay (57:19). First place finishers for the Lady Mustangs were Kaylen Mullins (high jump, 4-2) and Wendy Perez (discus, 68-8).
