Dalton High coach Scott Thomson wasn’t sure what he was working with as he began putting together this year’s Catamounts track and field team.
With the season a few weeks old now, the situation looks pretty good.
Building on a recent title win at the Northwest Invitational — the Lady Cats also won their portion of that event — Dalton’s boys were dominant in a head-to-head home meet against Ringgold on Thursday, winning 96-34.
The Lady Cats also topped Ringgold, although coach Pam Brackett said no score was kept.
Led by sophomore sprinter Tre Beck, who finished second in two individual events and ran on two winning relay teams, the Cats took first in 12 events.
“I’m just so blessed to have a group that comes out and works every day,” Thomson said.
Beck finished first in the 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds) and 200 (22.8). He also ran legs for the 4x100 team that included Tre Bonds, Trae Washington and Chas Thomason — Beck anchored as the Cats finished in 44.1 seconds — and the 4x400 team that included Keith Wrenn, Thomason and Christian Pineda and finished in 3:47.
Washington was also a double winner, taking both the triple jump (39 feet, 10 inches) and long jump (20-10). Other victories came from Preston Pound (3,200, 10.49), Thomason (high jump, 6-4), Beau Brown (pole vault, 10-0), Josh Burgess (shot put, 44-4), Andrew Bruner (1,600, 4:51) and Pineda (800, 2:08).
In the girls meet, Dalton’s doubles winners were Carina Nieto (3,200,12:39; 1,600, 5:50) and Kathryn Sigmon (long jump, 15-5; triple jump, 32-5 1/2).
